FAQ

Q: Which Smart Kitchen Gadget is Best?

Selecting the best smart kitchen gadget depends on what you intend to do with it. In general, you need to consider metrics like durability, versatility, and ease of use. An ideal smart kitchen gadget should also include smartphone connectivity, sensors, long battery life, and even integration with digital assistants.

Q: Is a Smart Kitchen Worth It?

While you may still prefer conventional methods, mixing them with some modern smart device is an efficient way to improve your cooking. It also allows you to undertake precision cooking and 3D food printing.

Q: Are Smart Kitchen Gadgets Repairable?

Most smart kitchen gadgets work perfectly, but sometimes, something can get broken during shipping or from the manufacturer. If you notice a broken functionality right out of the box, you should contact the seller and immediately return the item.

These gadgets are often not easily repairable. Many are powered by processors and integrate with other smart home tech. The electronics involved are usually too complex for DIY fixes. Even then, it might not be possible to get inside the device.

This Rapid Ice Cream Maker Is Easily the "Coolest" Gadget at CES 2021

When it comes to sub-zero levels of coolness, there was only one winner at CES 2021—the ColdSnap ice cream maker.

After all, is there anything better than an ice cream maker that's reliant on disposable pods to produce your food? Well, if you're concerned about the environment, then yes. But we digress. Let's take a closer look.

Ice Cream in 90 Seconds?!

It's perhaps easiest to think of the ColdSnap as a reverse Keurig machine. Rather than creating hot drinks, the machine turns its pods into ice cream, smoothies, iced cocktails, and other frozen delights. Some of the more surprising items on the ColdSnap menu include protein shakes, frozen yogurts, and non-dairy ice cream creations.

The ColdSnap unit is 17 x 17 x 9 inches, so will comfortably sit on the countertop in your kitchen. Beware of the weight though; all that refrigeration power means it comes in at a back-breaking 50 pounds.

What's the Catch?

The obvious issue is the environmental concern. While the pods have been made from aluminum rather than plastic to aid recycling and supposedly reduce the company's carbon footprint, you can be sure that millions of disposed of capsules are still going to end up in the regular trash.

And in keeping with the ice coolness of the ColdSnap machine, the price of the unit is sure to make your wallet shudder. Although the machine is still in the prototype phase, the company confirmed the device could cost anywhere from $500 to $1000 when it becomes available in the second quarter of 2021.

You also need to consider the price of the pods themselves. Each one will cost up to $3, meaning that using the ColdSnap to make dessert is going to be a lot more expensive than grabbing a cornetto from your local ice cream van.

Lastly, of course, we still have no idea what ColdSnap's ice cream will taste like. The nature of virtual CES this year meant we couldn't do any hands-on testing on the show floor. We'll just have to trust the photographs and assume it tastes delightful!

What Other Kitchen Tech is New at CES?

ColdSnap wasn't the only company releasing new kitchen tech at CES.

The build-up week kicked off with Sharp unveiling new Alexa-enabled smart microwaves at the Techfluence fringe event, while the Blendjet 2 promises to let you make healthy fruit drinks while you're on-the-go.

CES is now winding down, with today being the last official day of the event. Make sure you follow along for all our post-event analysis in the days ahead.

Is This the Perfect CES Gadget for Young Children?

The Skoog Cube is a sensory stimulation cube for children aged between three and nine.

Originally designed for children with learning disabilities to express themselves through sounds and music, the Skoog suite has grown to incorporate more activities suitable for kids of all abilities.

The Skoog Cube team was at CES 2021 to showcase their product and announce some big news—they now have an official partnership with Sesame Street.

What Is the Skoog Cube?

The cube's range of games and activities is impressive.

For example, there are stories in which children can determine the outcome, a musical interface for playing and singing along, brain games, and more.

You also get 8GB of memory for offline music playback, and the ability to use the Skoog Cube as a Bluetooth speaker for audio tracks you've got saved elsewhere. There is even a headphone port, so the fun won't distract the adults in the room.

The cube itself is soft and squishy, making it safe to be around even younger members of your household.

There is also an accompanying app that lets parents take control of various lights and sounds on the device.

What's the Sesame Street News All About?

At CES 2021, Skoog Cube confirmed that its first official content partner would be Sesame Street.

Using Sesame Street "Wonder Dots" (which are small, soft RFID dots that attach to the exterior of the cube), the voices of various characters from the series will come to life across the toy's various games.

Why Is the Skoog Cube So Good?

One of the main reasons we love this toy is due to the sheer number of activities it will offer kids without needing to rely on a screen.

Screen time remains an ongoing issue for little kids, with parents all-too-often turning to tablets for entertainment.

The Skoog Cube will ship later this year. No price is yet confirmed.

This Is the First Health Tracker to Monitor 7 Different Biometrics

CES 2021 saw a demo of HeathyU, a health tracker that will launch later this year and be able to monitor seven different essential biometrics in tandem.

Doing so obviously allows you to keep an around-the-clock eye on your vitals, but also means your doctor will be able to listen to the device remotely to give you an assessment.

Remote doctors have been a big theme at CES 2021 thanks to the pandemic and stay-at-home mentality.

2020 has put greater emphasis on the need to advance remote patient monitoring technology, which is why we have prioritized bringing integrated sensors and intelligent insights into the home making it easy for patients to use and viable for providers to leverage during care.

But in truth, this isn't a "pandemic play." The HealthyU has practical benefits for people who suffer from cardiovascular disease, when symptoms are prone to fluctuate over days, weeks, and even months. If you are at risk, being able to have a doctor check your biometrics when you're feeling bad without needing to leave the house is a big plus.

Which Biometrics Does HealthyU Support?

The wireless seven-lead ECG can also monitor for heart murmurs, lung sounds, heart rate, blood oxygen saturation levels (known as Pulse Oximetry), temperature, respiratory rate, and blood pressure trend.

A seven-lead ECG stands out compared to the Apple Watch and Fitbit Sense's one-lead, but is still below 12-lead hospital quality.

Using the HealthyU is also easy. Just hold the device over your heart (while making skin contact) and press your index and middle finger from each hand on the correct spaces. You will be able to get your feedback within seconds.

FDA clearance and a subsequent launch is expected in Q2 2021. No price has yet been provided.

Samsung’s New Galaxy SmartTag Has Some Serious Shortcomings

Samsung has entered into the tracking device sector with the release of its Galaxy SmartTag. The news was announced at the Samsung Unpacked event as CES draws to a close.

Costing $30 upon launch, it will go head-to-head with Tile, whose tags are priced at $25.

But despite the extra price, the SmartTag still has some shortcomings compared to its rival.

How Does the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag Work?

The Galaxy SmartTag is a small dongle that you can attach to items using a keyring. Each dongle uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

The idea is to add dongles to all the things you might regularly misplace; think items such as car keys, pet collars, luggage, and the like.

Then, when the inevitable happens and they go missing, you can quickly locate them using an app on your phone. It will show the dongle's last known location on a map, so you can head there and pick it up.

What's Wrong With the Galaxy SmartTag?

Two things immediately jump out: compatibility and a lack of Ultra Wideband support.

Perhaps oddly, SmartTags will only work with Galaxy devices. It's yet another sign that Samsung is taking an increased amount of guidance from the Apple playbook.

From a usability standpoint, there are also issues. The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag will not support Ultra Wideband (UWB). For a device that's supposed to show you the exact location of something, that's not ideal. UWB devices specialize in short-range, high-bandwidth communication, and are thus perfect for precision locating.

Tile has a UWB device due in mid-2021 and Apple's new tracker will also have the capabilities. Samsung's own phones even have the tech inside them.

Samsung said that a Galaxy SmartTag+ model would be released in the second half of the year and it will include UWB. It will only cost $10 more than the entry-level version. If you want to buy multiple tags, it might be better to wait.

The SmartTag will be available in Black and Oatmeal colors.

Wait, Apple Is Releasing Tracking Tags?

Yes, it looks likely. Rumors have been growing that a Tile-like Bluetooth tracking tag is in the works.

Apple appeared to accidentally confirm the news in a video uploaded last April, and Apple patents for a "locatable tag" have been submitted. It is safe to assume that the tags will only work with Apple products. They are rumored to use a CR2032 battery, so you would need to change it every year.

Believed to be called AirTags, they are expected at some point in 2021.

The OneLife X Is a Silent Air Purifier With Smart Capabilities

As the world has become more polluted, we have found it harder to breathe. Particulate matter in the air enters our lungs and is responsible for a range of health conditions. This has become clear over recent years. There also appears to be a link between pollution and the severity of COVID-19.

There are many air purifiers on the market, but most generate background noise, and few come equipped with modern features and smart home integration. At the virtual CES 2021 event, OneLife, a German health-tech company, took to the floor to launch the OneLife X air purifier.

What Is the OneLife X?

The OneLife X is a smart and silent air purifier for your home. The noise generated by other machines puts many people off investing in a unit, or, if they do, using it regularly. However, with air continually entering our body, ensuring a constant flow of clean air is essential. The device is made from environmentally-friendly materials, too.

The company opted for a bamboo outer shell, recycled plastics, and a washable filter. This means you don't have to replace the filter, minimizing waste, and saving you from a hidden recurring expense. The plasma filter is effective as well, eliminating particles of all sizes, including PM1.0 ultra-fine dust.

OneLife X Features

There are three options for interacting with your OneLife X; the built-in Display-Panel, the smartphone-based SmartControl, or with your voice via Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri. Using the Display-Panel, it's possible to power on the unit, start Auto mode, enable Night mode, and activate the higher-power Boost mode.

The OneLife X's smart features set it apart from many air purifiers available today. Notably, you can connect remotely to the purifier using the Android or iOS smartphone app. This allows you to modify the same settings as found on the Display-Panel even when you aren't physically next to the unit.

Built-in sensors also detect and record air quality data on the OneLife X. This syncs to your smartphone app for later analysis. Similarly, the app can highlight the most pressing or noteworthy detections. For instance, it can detect humidity, temperature, and VOC details and alert you to the most critical areas to address.

OneLife X Availability

For now, the OneLife X is a late-stage concept. In the near future, the company intends to start a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. Although there's no detailed timeline available, or pricing information, you can join the OneLife mailing list to be kept up to date with the OneLife X launch.

Can an AI Pet Robot Replace Traditional Cats and Dogs?

Dogs are man's best friend, and cats aren't too bad either.

But let's be honest; pets do have some downsides. They smell, have a habit of doing their "business" in annoying places, and are prone to stealing your pillow at night.

Vanguard Industries hopes to address some of the shortcomings of live creatures with a new AI robot pet. Called Moflin, it's fluffy, loving, and can be turned off when required.

We stopped by Vanguard's virtual booth at CES 2021 to see what all the fuss was about.

What Is Moflin?

Moflin, which raised an impressive $600,000 on Kickstarter before finally becoming a reality, looks like a cross between a mouse and a guinea pig.

Vanguard was keen to stress that the pet had emotional capabilities. It will learn to love you back (as long as you're nice to it!) thanks to a unique algorithm that uses built-in sensors to evaluate its surroundings. The sensors include gyroscopes, touch sensors, and microphones.

All that means it can tell the difference between the many people who interact with it. If your partner treats it like a family member while you shut it in a dark closet, it is going to react more positively to your partner than it does to you.

(Note: We're joking, you should never leave the robot locked in a closet, AI pets have feelings too!)

The AI pet's feelings are expressed through twitches, murmurs, and other "animal" actions that you'd expect to see from trusty Fido or Smudge. In fact, all of the movements and noises are modeled on real animals.

According to Vanguard, Moflin's personality will continue to develop over time, as will the range of emotions it will display. Each AI pet is capable of being anxious, calm, happy, excited, sad, and more.

When it's time for Moflin to sleep (read, recharge), it will take itself to the accompanying "nest," snuggle down, and reboot. While charging is happening, it will even twitch and shift, just like a real pet would do.

Moflin will start shipping in March and will cost $400. Sounds like a lot, but keep in mind that you don't need to buy food and there are no vet bills, making it much cheaper than a regular pet over the course of its lifetime.

Can Moflin Replace Your Dog?

And so to the million-dollar question—is Moflin an adequate replacement for Fido?

As a bonafide dog lover, for me, the answer is no. But make no mistake, as these types of AI pets become more advanced, it's easy to see more and more people who live in small homes or have young kids turning to them as a solution for their animal companionship.

New Touchless Doorbell From Arlo Will Reduce Germ Transmission

We said back at the start of the week in our CES preview that "pandemic tech"—in all its forms—was sure to be a big theme during the event.

And so it has proved; companies are trying to adapt their existing product lines to take advantage of the new market niche. We've already had Razer reveal a futuristic face mask, an alarm clock that disinfects your phone, and antibacterial laptop bags from Targus.

Another one that caught our on eye the CES virtual show floor is a new touchless doorbell from Arlo. The theory is that doorbells are a potential weak spot in our COVID armory; less doorbell touching equals less transmission.

How Does a Touchless Doorbell Work?

Well, Arlo wasn't overly forthcoming with details. It couldn't supply us with a release date or price. But we do know a little about how the new doorbell will work.

It will rely on proximity sensing technology to gauge the distance of someone who is approaching your door. When someone is close enough, the doorbell will light up and emit a chime.

Related: Bigger Inside Brings Virtual Reality Shoot-Outs to CES 2021

In turn, this is supposed to make the guest realize that the doorbell has been activated. Whether or not that will work in practice remains to be seen. We can envisage a situation in which most people are left confused and end up pressing the unit anyway, at least until the use of touchless doorbells starts to become more widespread.

The new touchless device has been named among the CES Innovation Award Honorees, so you can expect to hear a lot more about it over the coming 12 months.

Here's what Tejas Shah, CIO at Arlo, had to say about the recognition:

The CES Innovation Awards highlight the most thoughtful technology and we are pleased our Essential Indoor Camera and Touchless Video Doorbell are in such great company. Arlo is constantly working to deliver added peace of mind to our users. Security solutions like the Essential Indoor Camera and its integrated privacy shield prove our ongoing commitment to privacy and home security excellence.

Also New: Indoor Camera With Privacy Shield.

Arlo will also launch a new indoor camera with a privacy shield in 2021. Its goal is to let families choose when their cameras are recording and when they aren't

When enabled, the privacy shield will disable recording as well and motion and audio detection.

The new camera also won a CES Innovation Award.

Keep Your Car Allergen-Free With a Portable HEPA Filter

Air filters and air purification systems are always on show at CES, and this year is no different.

One new product that stood out was the Scosche portable air filter. Designed to fit in a car's cup holder, it purifies up to four square meters of space.

What About the Smart Features?

Officially called the FrescheAir Portable HEPA Air Purifier and Deodorizer, the filter is motion-activated—whenever someone steps inside your car, it will turn itself on and start the cleanse the air.

There's also a digital display on the top of the device. It shows your car cabin's current air quality, temperature, and humidity.

Related: Protect the Environment With the Hydraloop H600 Water Recycling Unit

According to company reps at CES 2021, the device is ideal for anyone who suffers from allergies such as hayfever or pet dander.

The device, which is available for $99 upon launch, also ships with a dual 12W USB car charger and a regular charging cable.

Remember, you will need to replace the HEPA air filter on a regular basis. Depending on the environment, the recommended lifespan of a filter is four to six months. If you let it run longer, the performance will start to drop off.
