Chromebook Users Can Get Roguelike Dead Cells for Free

There are all sorts of benefits from using a Chromebook. And now, another benefit has arrived, with Google offering the stellar platformer roguelike Dead Cells for free, as discovered by Android Police.

Normally, Dead Cells sells for $8.99 on Google Play, which is a steal in its own right. However, for free, grabbing it is a no-brainer.

What Is Dead Cells?

Dead Cells is a platformer roguelike that will put your video game abilities to the test.

Here’s the description of the game from Motion Twin, the developers of Dead Cells:

Dead Cells is a rogue-lite, Castlevania-inspired action-platformer, allowing you to explore a sprawling, ever-changing castle… assuming you’re able to fight your way past its keepers.

To beat the game, you’ll have to master 2D “souls-lite combat” with the ever-present threat of permadeath looming. No checkpoints. Kill, die, learn, repeat.

Dead Cells has a score of 89 on Metacritic, which is an incredibly high score for a game from a small team without the AAA budget and pedigree behind it.

If that sounds like something that’ll appeal to you, then you absolutely should take advantage of this offer. You’ll get quite a few hours from the game and a real feeling of satisfaction as you grind your way through it.

How to Get Your Free Copy of Dead Cells

To snag a copy, you simply need to head to Google’s Chromebook perks page. Once there, scroll down a bit and you’ll see the Dead Cells section. Click Get Perk, and follow the steps to redeem your copy.

Of course, you must own a Chromebook to do so. Those without one can’t take advantage of this perk.

Google is making this perk available until August 7th, 2021, so you have ample time to jump in and grab the game for your Chromebook. And if you just purchased a Chromebook, check out our handy tips that all new Chromebook users need to know.

Plex Launches Free Live TV Channels for Everyone

Plex has launched free Live TV in all 220+ countries that it currently serves. These Live TV channels will be available to watch anytime, anywhere. There are 80 channels available at launch, with Plex promising to add even more in the coming months.

What Free Live TV Channels Are Available on Plex?

As detailed in a post on The Plex Blog, the free Live TV channels on Plex are linear, pre-programmed channels. Which means you can channel hop until you find something you want to watch. And once you find something, the content plays out live from beginning to end.

This gives you a very different experience than streaming on-demand from the likes of Netflix and Disney+ (is Disney+ worth the money?). But in a good way for anyone nostalgic for the bygone age of television.

The 80 free Live TV channels on Plex include news offerings from Reuters and Yahoo Finance, kids’ programming on Toon Goggles, food and travel shows on Tastemade, sports programming courtesy of the fubo Sports Network, gaming content via IGN TV, and movies from The Film Detective and Midnight Pulp.

Some of the more out-there channels include The Bob Ross Channel (for Bob Ross fans), Love Destination (for romantic types), KMTV (for all things K-pop), The Pet Collective (for pet lovers), Surf Now TV (for surfers), and Unidentified (for fans of UFOs and the supernatural).

How to Watch Free Live TV on Plex

All of these Live TV channels are available to watch on Plex for free, as long as you’re willing to sit through the ads. Most of them are available globally, with a handful restricted to the US and Canada. The channels are easily accessible via the Plex app, which is available on most devices you can think of.

The free Live TV offering is distinct from Plex’s existing over-the-air TV and DVR offering, which requires a digital antenna and tuner. You can watch these channels on the Plex app, without any additional hardware. Still, the OTA option gives you access to major networks such as NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, CW, and PBS, so it’s worth setting up.

Don’t Forget About The Roku Channel…

Plex isn’t alone in offering free live TV channels to those willing to sit through ads. Since June 2020, The Roku Channel boasts over 100 channels in the US, which includes some of the same channels you can now watch on Plex. Still, we’re not complaining, as they’re all free, and perfect for those moments when you just want to sit back and channel surf.

You Can Now Watch More Free TV on The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel now offers more than 100 channels for free. Which means cord-cutters and other fans of free stuff now have more content to choose from. And to help users navigate the free stuff, Roku has also launched a Live TV Channel Guide.

In 2017, Roku launched The Roku Channel. This was a free, ad-supported channel full of movies. It has since evolved into a hub full of channels showing a diverse range of content. Most of which is free to watch if you’re willing to put up with the occasional ad.

The Roku Channel Expands Yet Again

As of the start of June 2020, The Roku Channel boasts more than 100 channels in the US. This is thanks to an expansion adding another 40 channels. These include The Bob Ross Channel, Vanity Fair, Wired, XUMO Free Movies, Redbox Free Movies, and Reuters.

The channels offering free content include news, sports, kids, and lifestyle programming. And there’s also Spanish-language channels, including AFV Español, América TeVé, Latido Music, Love Nature Español, MOOVIEMEX by Pongalo, and Pongalo NovelaClub.

“Now more than ever it’s important for our users to have easy access to free content, such as news, and the ability to find it quickly. We’re excited to enhance the streaming experience through a Live Channel TV Guide and bring more free content from The Roku Channel to the forefront.”
— Ashley Hovey, Director, AVOD Growth, Roku.

With so many channels and so many thousands of hours of programming available on them, Roku has also launched a new Live TV Channel Guide. As the name suggests, this lets you see at a glance what’s playing on the live TV channels now and in the future.

The Live TV Channel Guide is accessible via a new Live TV tile on The Roku Channel. You can also press left on your Roku remote to open it when watching something. When you open it you’ll see a list of channels, plus what’s playing now and in the future.

The Best Streaming TV Services to Watch

The Roku Channel is one of the best streaming TV services. There are plenty of others, both free and paid, so don’t bother watching content that doesn’t interest you. With its broad range of channels and TV guide, The Roku Channel is a good place to start though.

How to Watch HBO for Free

If you’ve been feeling left out from your friends’ conversations about Game of Thrones or Westworld, you might be looking for ways to watch HBO. For years, HBO has been producing binge-worthy content that’s only accessible to paid subscribers and people who pay for TV packages.

While HBO doesn’t come free (at least by legitimate means), there are still several ways you can sign up (and even stack) free trials. Not to mention that you can still watch some HBO shows and movies online for free, and some services even offer a complimentary subscription to HBO.

Do you want to start watching HBO for free? Then read on to find out the many ways you can get a free trial to HBO, and other ways to get HBO free.

1. Sign Up for a Free Trial on HBO.com

HBO Free Trial HBO Website

HBO offers a seven-day free trial of HBO Now right on its website. That means one whole week of streaming free content to your phone, tablet, computer, or TV before you have to start paying $15/month.

If you don’t cancel your subscription at least 24 hours before your trial ends, HBO will charge you the price of the subscription. You should also keep in mind that the free trial is for new customers only, so you won’t get to start a trial twice.

2. Get an HBO Free Trial on Hulu

Hulu HBO Free Trial

Already have Hulu? You’re in luck—Hulu offers a week-long HBO free trial for its subscribers.

3. Get an HBO Free Trial on Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime HBO Free Trial

Like Hulu, Amazon Prime Video also offers an HBO add-on for current subscribers. You can start a seven-day free trial of HBO through Amazon Prime, giving you access to HBO’s library of movies, TV shows, and documentaries.

If you decide to keep your HBO subscription, you’ll have to pay $15/month in addition to your Amazon Prime subscription. It’s also worth mentioning that Prime Video already comes with a handful of HBO shows that don’t require the Amazon Prime HBO add-on. That said, make sure you’ve exhausted the existing HBO options before starting the free trial.

There are a ton of amazing shows to watch on HBO. If you’re not ready to make the commitment (or just want to see what HBO has to offer), you can watch free episodes and documentaries on the HBO website.

Although the site gives you access to several full-length documentaries, most of the free episodes are just pilots—you’ll have to get a free trial or a paid HBO subscription if you want to see more. That aside, it’s still a great way to get a feel for some of HBO’s best series, such as The Wire, Game of Thrones, and The Sopranos.

For the largest collection of clips and trailers, head to HBO’s own YouTube channel. Otherwise, searching for videos of an HBO show or movie you’re interested in will yield tons of results from third-party channels.

8. Check With Your Cable or Satellite Company

HBO Free Online With TV Package

If you haven’t ditched cable yet, you might be able to get HBO for free or at a discounted price. Several popular cable companies like Verizon FiOS, DirectTV, Comcast, and Cox include HBO in certain packages.

For example, with the DirecTV Choice package, you’ll get HBO included with the price for one year, and that’s in addition to an HBO Max subscription. Even if your cable or satellite plan doesn’t include HBO, it doesn’t hurt to call up your service provider to see if they’re offering any special HBO deals or free trials.

The Best Ways to Watch HBO Free Online

Once you run out of free HBO trials, you’ll have to pay the price of the subscription. The monthly price of HBO isn’t cheap, so taking advantage of any introductory free trials, free HBO videos online, and special offers for cable customers is a good idea before you commit.

Now that so many TV shows and movies are available online, it’s the perfect time to consider getting rid of costly cable and satellite TV. And these awesome live TV streaming services might just convince you to cut the cord.

Civilization VI Is Now Free on the Epic Games Store

You can now get Civilization VI for free from the Epic Games Store. One week after Epic gave GTA V away for free, Civilization VI is available. However, as with all of the free games Epic gives away on the Games Store, it’s only available for a limited time.

Since launch, Epic has given away dozens of games on the Games Store. However, the quality of titles in recent weeks has taken an uplift. And while Civilization VI may not be the cultural phenomenon that GTA V is, it’s still well worth playing.

How to Get Civilization VI for Free

To get your copy of Civilization VI for free, head to the Civilization VI page on the Epic Games Store and sign into your account. If you haven’t got an account yet, you can sign up for one for free. Civilization VI is free until May 28, 2020.

Civilization VI is a turn-based strategy 4X game. The idea is to expand your empire across the map, advance your culture, and build a civilization that will be remembered. There’s also several multiplayer modes allowing you to go up against your friends.

Civilization VI was released on Windows in 2016, and has since been released on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. However, despite its age, Civilization VI has aged well. And it’s still receiving new content, with a season pass available for some extra money.

If you’re new to the Epic Games Store, please be aware that you may need to enable two-factor authentication on your account in order to download free games. However, as you should enable 2FA on all of your online accounts, this is a positive thing.

Is Civilization VI the Best Version?

As you may have guessed from the number in the title, Civilization VI is just the latest game in the Civilization series. And while some people may think it’s the best version, others prefer the older titles. So, here’s every version of Civilization, compared.

GTA V Is Now Free on the Epic Games Store

You can now get Grand Theft Auto V for free from the Epic Games Store. However, the offer is available for a limited time only, so you’ll have to be quick to grab a copy of the game. Still, even seven years after it was released, GTA V is well worth playing.

Since launching the Epic Games Store in 2018, Epic Games has given away dozens of games for free. However, none quite as big as GTA V, which is available to download for free until May 21st, 2020. And this is Grand Theft Auto V: Premium Edition, no less.

How to Get GTA V for Free

To grab a copy of GTA V for free, all you need is a Epic Games account, which is also completely free. Once you have set one up, sign in and head over to the Grand Theft Auto: Premium Edition page on the Epic Games Store, where it should be listed as Free.

Grand Theft Auto V: Premium Edition includes the Story mode, access to GTA Online, and “all existing gameplay upgrades and content including The Doomsday Heist, Gunrunning, Smuggler’s Run, Bikers.” You’ll also get the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack.

GTA V may be seven years old (having been released on consoles in 2013) but it’s still a fantastic game. The story will take you hours to complete, while Grand Theft Auto Online adds even more ways to make money, spend money, and generally cause chaos.

The chances are most people have already played GTA V by now. However, so many people tried to grab a free copy of the game on Thursday (May 14) that the Epic Games Store suffered an eight-hour outage. Thankfully, it’s now up and running once again.

Is the Epic Games Store Better Than Steam?

For years Steam was the only digital storefront for PC gamers. However, Epic Games Store is now a serious contender, and giving away GTA V will only help it compete. With that in mind, be sure to read our article pitting Steam vs. the Epic Games Store.

Plex Adds Crackle Content to Its Free Streaming Service

Plex has added Crackle content to its free streaming service. Which is the ad-supported Plex Free Movies and TV. This means that Plex users in the US suddenly have access to thousands more TV shows, movies, and documentaries for free.

In December 2019, Plex launched its own free streaming service. This is full of movies, TV shows, and documentaries, all of which are free to watch. However, Plex has partnered with Crackle to bring thousands more free titles to viewers in the US.

How to Watch Crackle Content on Plex

It should be noted that most of Crackle’s catalog is older movies and TV shows you’ve probably already seen. However, there are some big names, with movies including Captain Phillips and The Illusionist, and TV shows including Hell’s Kitchen and Roseanne.

As is the fashion these days, Crackle has already produced its own original content. This includes On Point, a docuseries following high school basketball players, and Yelawolf: A Slumerican Life, which takes you on tour with the hip-hop pioneer.

Plex claims that as a result of its partnership with Crackle, “Plex users in the US will now be able to stream more individual movies than you can stream on Netflix.” Which is a bold claim but an intriguing one for those who don’t mind watching ads.

To watch Crackle content on Plex, just open the Movies & TV section of the Plex app. There you’ll find all of the movies and TV shows offered by Crackle, organized in various different ways. Just click on a title and tap Play to start streaming it for free.

The Best TV Shows to Watch on Crackle

While Plex is only offering Crackle content in the US, the company claims to be “working on new partnerships to deliver even more free streaming content to all our friends around the world in the coming weeks.” Or you could just use a VPN instead.

This is a great deal for Plex users, who can now watch even more content for free just for putting up with the occasional commercial break. And if you’re new to Crackle and unsure where to start, we have listed the best free TV shows to watch on Crackle.

You Can Now Get Free PS4 Games From Sony

Sony has launched a new initiative called Play At Home. Which is a play on the Stay At Home message being pushed during the COVID-19 pandemic. And the first thing Sony is doing as part of this initiative is giving everyone two free games.

That’s right, Sony is giving two free games away to anyone with a PlayStation 4. And it doesn’t matter whether or not you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber. And, unlike some of the games Sony has previously given away with PS Plus, these titles aren’t duds.

How to Get Two Free PS4 Games From Sony

As announced in a post on the PlayStation Blog, the Play At Home initiative has two components. One is aimed at gamers, and the other is aimed at independent developers. And both are designed to make life a little easier as we all tackle coronavirus.

First up are the aforementioned free games, with Sony giving away Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey for free to all PS4 owners. With the exception of China and Germany, where Knack 2 and Journey will be available for free.

The games will be available for free as digital downloads from 8pm PDT on April 15 through to 8pm PDT on May 5. Once you nab the games, they’re yours to keep. However, downloads may take longer than usual due to Sony’s traffic management efforts.

The second element of Play At Home is a $10 million fund earmarked for indie developers. This is an attempt to help Sony’s development partners make it through the current crisis without going bust. And Sony is promising to reveal more information soon.

More PlayStation 4 Games Worth Playing

Both Journey and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection are excellent titles. However, if you’re stuck at home all day you’ll probably make light work of them both. In which case you should check out the best PS4 exclusives and the best PS4 games for kids too.
