How to Format a USB Drive (And Why You Would Need To) | MakeUseOf

Formatting a USB drive is almost like formatting any other drive. You can either go with the default settings or you can figure out what the various options mean and use the ones that best suite your use case. We'll help you with the latter, so you can select the optimal settings when you format your USB drive.

Whether you're running Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10, the steps are essentially the same.

  1. Plug in the USB drive.
  2. Open Windows File Explorer and go to This PC (aka Computer or My Computer).
  3. Right-click the drive, and select Format...

The formatting options you can customize are File system, Allocation unit size, Volume label, and Format options. You can also Restore device defaults in case your custom settings aren't working.

To format your drive, you simply make your selection, click Start, followed by OK to confirm that you really want to erase all data and the drive will be formatted.

However, before you proceed with formatting, you will want to understand what each of these options actually means. So let's go through them one by one.

In Windows 10, you will see a maximum of four different file systems: NTFS, FAT, FAT32, and exFAT. You will not see FAT and FAT32 if your drive is larger than 32 GB. So what is the difference between those file systems and which one should you choose? Let's look at the benefits of each.

  • read/write files larger than 4 GB and up to maximum partition size
  • create partitions larger than 32 GB
  • compress files and save disk space
  • better space management = less fragmentation
  • allows more clusters on larger drives = less wasted space
  • add user permissions to individual files and folders (Windows Professional)
  • on-the-fly file encryption using EFS (Encrypting File System; Windows Professional)

FAT & FAT32 Compared to NTFS:

  • compatible with virtually all operating systems
  • takes up less space on the USB drive
  • less disk writing operations = faster and less memory usage

exFAT Compared to FAT & FAT32:

  • read/write files larger than 4 GB
  • create drive partitions larger than 32 GB
  • better space management = less fragmentation

Due to its nature, FAT or better yet FAT32 are suitable for drives smaller than 32 GB and in an environment where you never need to store files larger than 2 or 4 GB, respectively. In other words, any regular sized hard drive (60 GB +) should be formatted with NTFS.

However, due to the way NTFS works it is not recommended for flash drives, even when they are bigger than 32 GB. This is where exFAT comes in. It combines the benefits of FAT (small, fast) and NTFS (large file size supported) in a way that is perfect for flash drives.

Keep in mind though that FAT and FAT32 are the only file systems that are cross-platform compatible. NTFS is supported in Linux, but it requires a hack or third-party application to work on a Mac. exFAT, on the other hand, is supported as of OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), but you need drivers to read it on Linux.

If for compatibility or speed reasons you want to go with FAT or FAT32, always go with FAT32, unless you are dealing with a device of 2 GB or smaller.

Which Allocation Unit Size Works Best?

Hard drives are organized in clusters and the allocation unit size describes the size of a single cluster. The file system records the state of each cluster, i.e. free or occupied. Once a file or a portion of a file is written to a cluster, the cluster is occupied, even if there is space remaining.

Hence, larger clusters can lead to more wasted or slack space. With smaller clusters, however, the drive becomes slower as each file is broken up into smaller pieces, and it takes much longer to draw them all together when the file is accessed.

Hence, the optimal allocation unit size depends on what you want to do with your USB drive. If you want to store large files on that drive, a large cluster size is better as the drive will be faster. If, however, you want to store small files or run programs off your flash drive, a smaller cluster size will help preserve space.

Rule of thumb: large drive and/or large files = large allocation unit size (and vice versa)

For a 500 MB USB flash drive, rather select 512 bytes (FAT32) or 32 kilobytes (FAT). On a 1 TB external hard drive select 64 kilobytes (NTFS).

What Is a Volume Label?

The volume label is the drive's name. It's optional and you can basically name your drive anything you want. However, there are a few rules to follow, depending on the file system.


  • maximum of 32 characters
  • no tabs
  • can display both uppercase and lowercase characters


  • maximum of 11 characters
  • none of the following characters: * ? . , ; : / \ | + = < > [ ]
  • no tabs
  • will be displayed as all uppercase

You can use spaces, regardless of the file system.

A full format removes file records and scans the drive for bad sectors. The Quick Format option skips the scan, making it a lot faster. If you're dealing with a healthy or new drive, if you don't intend on putting important data onto it, or if you're pressed for time, choose Quick Format. Otherwise, remove the checkmark.

Note: Neither option actually overwrites or deletes files; they both just clear the drive's index file, i.e. the Master File Table (MTF). If you want to securely and permanently delete data on your USB drive, formatting won't do it, you'll have to overwrite the files with a tool like DBAN.

How to Create a Checklist in Microsoft Excel | MakeUseOf

Many apps can create checklists, but do you really need yet another app? If you're already using spreadsheets, look no further. You can make a checklist in Microsoft Excel easily.

Even if you don't want to use it as an everyday to-do list app, a checklist is a good way to keep track of what you still need to do in your spreadsheet, directly in the spreadsheet itself.

Let's see how to create a checklist in Excel in five minutes or less.

We'll show you how to create an Excel checklist with checkboxes you can tick off as you complete the items. It will even indicate when you've checked off all the items, so you can tell at a glance.

Here are the simple steps we'll outline in more details below:

  1. Enable the Developer Tab.
  2. Enter the checklist items into your spreadsheet.
  3. Add the checkboxes and advanced formatting.

To create a checklist, you must enable the Developer tab on the ribbon. To do this, right-click on the ribbon and select Customize the Ribbon.

In the list of Main Tabs on the right side of the Excel Options dialog box, check the Developer box and then click OK.

Enter your to-do list, one item per cell. In our example, we have a cell with the Total Items and one with the total Items Packed, or how many items are checked off on our list.

The Am I good to go? cell will be red with NO in it if all the items are not checked off.

Once you check off all the items, the Am I good to go? cell turns green and will read YES.

Click the Developer tab. Then, click Insert in the Controls section and click the Check Box (Form Control).

Click in the cell into which you want to insert the checkbox. You'll see that there's text to the right of the checkbox. We only want the text box, not the text. While the checkbox control is selected, highlight the text next to the checkbox, and delete it.

The checkbox control does not automatically resize once you've deleted the text in it. If you want to resize it, right-click on the cell to select the checkbox and then left-click on the checkbox (to make the context menu disappear). It will be selected with circles at the corners (as shown above).

Drag one of the circles on the right side towards the checkbox to resize the outline to just the size of the checkbox. Then, you can move the checkbox to the center of the cell with the four-headed cursor.

Now, we want to copy that checkbox to the rest of our to-do list items.

To select the cell containing the checkbox, select any cell around it without a checkbox. Then, use one of the arrow keys on your keyboard to move to the cell with the checkbox.

To copy the checkbox to the other cells, move your cursor over the bottom-right corner of the selected cell with the checkbox until it turns into a plus sign. Make sure the cursor is NOT a hand. That will check the box.

Drag the plus sign down over the cells into which you want to copy the checkbox and release the mouse button. The checkbox is copied to all those cells.

Depending on what you want to use your checklist for, you can add further formatting elements to validate your list and summarize its status.

For this step, we need to use the column to the right of the checkboxes to store the TRUE and FALSE values for the checkboxes. That allows us to use those values to test if all the boxes are checked or not.

Right-click on the first checkbox (not the cell with the checkbox) and select Format Control.

On the Control tab on the Format Object dialog box, click the cell selection button on the right side of the Cell link box.

Select the cell to the right of the checkbox cell. An absolute reference to the selected cell is inserted in the Cell link box on the compact version of the Format Control dialog box.

Click the cell selection button again to expand the dialog box. Click OK on the dialog box to close it.

Repeat the procedure for each checkbox in your list.

Next, enter the total number of checkboxes in your list into the cell to the right of the Total Items cell.

Now, let's use a special function that calculates how many checkboxes have been checked.

Enter the following text into the cell to the right of the cell labeled Items Packed (or whatever you called it) and press Enter.

This counts the number of cells in the C column (from cell C2 through C9) that have the value TRUE.

In your sheet, you can replace "C2:C9" with the column letter and row numbers corresponding to the column to the right of your checkboxes.

We don't need the column with the TRUE and FALSE values showing, so let's hide it. Click on the lettered column heading to select the whole column. Then, right-click on the column heading and select Hide.

The lettered column headings now skip C, but there's a double line indicating a hidden column.

We'll use the IF function for Am I good to go? (or whatever you call it) to see if all the checkboxes are checked. Select the cell to the right of Am I good to go? and enter the following text.

This means that if the number in cell B10 is equal to the number calculated from the checked boxes in B11, YES will be automatically entered in the cell. Otherwise, NO will be entered.

You can also color code the cell based on whether the values in cells B10 and B11 are equal or not. This is called Conditional Formatting.

Let's see how to turn the cell red if not all the checkboxes are checked and green if they are. See our article about Conditional Formatting for information on how to create rules.

Select the cell next to "Am I good to go?". It's B14 in this example spreadsheet.

Create a rule for this cell with the Conditional Formatting Rules Manager dialog box using the Use a formula to determine which cells to format rule type.

Enter the following text in the Format values where this formula is true box.

Replace B11 and B12 with the cell references for your Total Items and Items Packed (or whatever you named these cells) values, if they're not the same cells. (See our guide to the Excel name box if you need more info on that.)

Then, click Format and select a red Fill color and click OK.

Create another new rule of the same type, but enter the following text in the Format values where this formula is true box. Again, replace the cell references to match your own checklist.

Then, click Format and select a green Fill color and click OK.

On the Conditional Formatting Rules Manager dialog box, enter an absolute reference for the cell you want to color green or red in the Applies to box.

Enter the same cell reference for both rules. In our example, we entered =$B$13.

Click OK.

The Am I good to go? cell in the B column now turns green and read YES when all the checkboxes are checked. If you uncheck any item, it will turn red and read NO.

You can create a checklist in Excel easily enough. But it just one type of list. You can also make dropdown lists in Excel with your custom items.

How to Fix the Windows Stop Code Memory Management BSOD

Windows 10 throws up a dazzling array of error messages and stop codes when things go wrong. When a bluescreen of death (BSOD) error hits, you can use the Windows 10 stop code to pinpoint and fix the issue.

At times, stop codes issue for very specific errors. At other times, you might have to work through a range of Windows 10 fixes. The Windows 10 "Memory Management" stop code involves the latter.

In this article, we help you resolve your memory management errors, one fix at a time.

Memory management in Windows is vital to keep your operating system ticking over nicely. Memory management is the function that manages your system memory. (I hear you say, "Duh, Gavin, it's in the title!") Properly working memory management, however, is vital to your system health.

When memory management goes wrong, your system will start showing BSODs at regular intervals. Here's why:

Memory management essentially tracks every memory location on your system, regardless of status. It manages the transition of memory and processes between your RAM and physical memory during execution, deciding how much memory to allocate (and how much is available for allocation). When you close a program, it reallocates that memory to other processes or marks it available for use.

Unfortunately, memory management isn't absolved of system errors, just like the rest of your system. And when it does crash, it takes your system with it.

Simply put, a memory management BSOD means there's been a critical memory management error. The memory management BSOD stop code is 0x0000001A. There are several well-known causes for memory management errors:

  • Faulty RAM
  • Issues with new hardware, such as a graphics card
  • Faulty drivers
  • Software issues, including corrupt system and operating system files
  • Disk errors

At times, your system might recover after a simple reset. If you encounter a Memory Management BSOD, restart your system and see if the error returns. If not, there is a chance it was a one-off.

So how do you fix it? Here are a few things you can try.

Have you tried switching your computer off and turning it back on again? This simple fix can fix all manner of Windows 10 issues, including the Windows 10 memory management stop code.

The first thing to do is to check that Windows 10 is completely up to date. Outdated system files can cause unexpected errors. Checking for a pending update is a quick and easy way to figure out if that is what is causing your issue.

Hit Windows key + I to open the Settings panel. Now, head to Update & Security, then check under Windows Update for any pending updates. If there is an update, save any important files, then press Restart now. Your system will reboot during the process.

You can use the integrated Windows Memory Diagnostic utility to check if your system RAM is working correctly. The Memory Diagnostic tool runs after a system reboot. It checks your system memory for errors and logs the scan to a text file for analysis.

Type Windows Memory Diagnostic into your Start menu search bar and select the best match. You have two options: reboot immediately and run the utility, or set the utility to run after your next reboot. As you are trying to fix your memory management BSODs, save any important documents, and reboot your system immediately. The Windows Memory Diagnostic runs immediately after reboot.

The log file, however, isn't apparent after you boot back into Windows 10. Press Windows key + X and select Event Viewer from the power menu. In the Event Viewer, select Event Viewer (Local) > Windows Logs > System. Then, in the right-hand column, select Find and type MemoryDiagnostic into the box. Hit Find Next. Your diagnostic results will display at the bottom of the window.

From there, you need to investigate any specific errors the Windows Memory Diagnostic throws up.

Windows Memory Diagnostic doesn't show any errors. But you're sure the issue relates to your system RAM. If that's the case, you can use MemTest86 to perform an in-depth memory test.

MemTest86 is a free, standalone memory testing tool for x86 machines. You boot MemTest86 from a USB flash drive (or bootable disc) and leave it to check your system RAM. Now, a MemTest86 RAM check takes a long time to complete; a single pass takes hours depending on the amount of RAM you have installed.

Another quick and handy potential fix is to update your system drivers. New software or hardware may come with new drivers, and your system might not have got the message. Driver faults are less common than in the days of computing yore, especially as Windows 10 now handles driver updates, by and large. But that's not to say they don't happen.

Press Windows Key + I to open the Settings panel, then select Update & Security > View update history. You can find any driver updates here. Now, type device manager in the Start menu search bar and select the best match. Head down the list and check for an error symbol. If there is nothing, your driver status is likely not the source of the issue.

That said, you can use a third-party tool to update all of your system drivers simultaneously. Check out this list of free tools you can use to fix the majority of Windows problems. The first two options---IOBit's Driver Booster and Snappy Driver Installer---do exactly this.

A common theme throughout Memory Management BSOD threads and forum posts is that, at times, outdated or brand-new GPU drivers can cause the BSOD. Although the focus is on the memory management stop code, there is a video memory management specific stop code, too. The video memory management internal stop code is 0x0000010E and may indicate a faulty GPU driver.

To update your GPU drivers, you need to head to the manufacturer's website and download the latest update. For the majority of users, that's either Nvidia or AMD.

If you're unsure what GPU you are using, type dxdiag in your Start Menu search bar and select the Best Match. When the DirectX Diagnostic Tool opens, select the Display tab. You'll find your GPU listed here.

Nvidia GPU owners also have the option of installing the Nvidia GeForce Experience---but is it worthwhile?

CHKDSK is a Windows system tool that verifies the file system and, with certain settings, fixes issues as it runs. You run CHKDSK from the Command Prompt, and it has a bunch of nifty features.

Type command prompt in your Start menu search bar, then right-click the best match and select Run as administrator. (Alternatively, press Windows key + X, then select Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.)

Next, type chkdsk /r and press Enter. The command will scan your system for errors and fix any issues along the way.

Memory management still occurring? System File Check is another Windows system tool that checks for missing and corrupt Windows system files. Sounds like CHKDSK, right? Well, SFC checks for Windows system files specifically, while CHKDSK scans your entire drive for errors.

But before running the SFC command, it is best to double-check that it is completely functional.

DISM stands for Deployment Image Servicing and Management. DISM is an integrated Windows utility with a vast range of functions. In this case, the DISM Restorehealth command ensures that our next fix will work properly. Work through the following steps.

  1. Type Command Prompt (Admin)in the Start menu search bar, then right-click and select Run as administrator to open an elevated Command Prompt.
  2. Type the following command and press Enter: DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  3. Wait for the command to complete. The process can take up to 20 minutes depending on your system health. The process seems stuck at certain times, but wait for it to complete.
  4. When the process completes, type sfc /scannow and press Enter.

Last but not least, physically check your system hardware. Did you move your system recently? There's a small chance your hardware unseated during the process. Only a small chance, but something worth checking!

Okay, still tearing your hair out? Sometimes nothing other than a Windows 10 Reset will completely fix your problem. Windows 10 Reset replaces your system files with a completely fresh set of files and theoretically clears lingering issues relating to the Memory Management error while keeping the majority of your important files intact.

Head to Settings > Update and Security > Recovery, then under Reset this PC select Get started. Your system restarts as soon as you hit the button, so make sure you to backup any important files beforehand. Your system will restart, then you may select Keep my files or Remove everything.

Memory Management BSODs are difficult to take care of. Many variables can lead to a Memory Management error, and that's exactly why diagnosing a direct issue is sometimes problematic. However, one of the above fixes will bring your system back from the brink so you can continue your work free of any BSOD for now.
