Microsoft is rolling out a new feature for OneDrive for Windows 10 that should ensure you never again lose access to your important documents. Once enabled, Folder Protection automatically backs up your important folders. Those being Desktop, Documents, and Pictures.

Folder Protection for All OneDrive Users

OneDrive’s new Folder protection was previously only available to OneDrive for Business users, but it’s now being made available to all OneDrive users. All you need is a OneDrive account running on Windows 10. And it’s surprisingly easy to set up.

A Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge, “This is a new feature […] available to OneDrive users with personal accounts. It makes it easier to move content into OneDrive, have access to all your important files on all your devices, and keep more files protected with features like ransomware detection & recovery.”

How to Enable OneDrive Folder Protection

To enable the Folder Protection feature for OneDrive in Windows 10, go to the OneDrive Settings, click on Auto Save, and then click Update Folders. Next, select the folders you want to sync with OneDrive, and then click Start Protection.

Microsoft OneDrive Folder Protection

Your files will now sync, and once the process has finished, you’ll be able to access them from anywhere. Now, if you switch PCs or temporarily use someone else’s computer you can access all of the files stored in your Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folders.

Microsoft Keeps On Improving OneDrive

This is a rather simple, straightforward feature that was probably well overdue. Still, when combined with OneDrive’s Files Restore feature, which is designed to help you recover from a ransomware attack, it makes OneDrive a more compelling prospect.

Whether you currently use a cloud storage service or not, you should check out our comparison of OneDrive, Google Drive, and Dropbox. And if you already have your files stored in the cloud check out these cloud storage managers designed to help keep everything organized.

Adobe Bridge is like the boring manager who nobody pays attention to till you need them. Adobe Bridge can not only help you manage your vast collection of photos, but it can also help you review them quickly with a slideshow.

The slideshow option is a powerful review and presentation aid that you should use more often.

How to Present a Slideshow Using Adobe Bridge

Adobe Bridge Settings

Adobe Bridge has a basic slideshow capability. But it also has a few features that allow you to customize the presentation for your audience. So, start by launching Adobe Bridge.

Go to View > Slideshow Options. Select the options to customize your presentation.

  • Black Out Additional Monitors. This setting will turn off the laptop or other connected devices if you are using a projector for your presentation.
  • Repeat Slideshow. This setting will keep the slideshow running on a loop.
  • Zoom Back And Forth. This is a default presentation style where one photo will zoom in and the next will slowly zoom out.
  • Slide Duration. The settings here will determine the time interval between each slide. Select the Manual option if you want to control the flow yourself.
  • Caption. Meta-data for each image can be displayed by selecting the Full option in the dropdown. Or, you can sequentially showcase them by choosing an option like Page Numbers.
  • When Presenting, Show Slides. You can choose to center an image or fill up the available space on the screen with the other two options. Consider the width and height of your images to make the right choice.
  • Transition Options. Dissolve is the simplest pick here, but you can also experiment with the Random option that will play with the other presentation styles in the dropdown. Also, set the speed of the transition effect with the slider.

You can play the slideshow with a click on the Play button. Alternatively, save the settings by clicking on Done. Then, when you are ready just go to View > Slideshow to start the presentation. To pause, press the Spacebar. To finish, press the Esc key.

Adobe Bridge has a few useful features tucked away. Did you also know that Adobe Bridge is a powerful image renaming tool?

If you own an Android phone and you’re tired of waking up to the standard alarm clock tones, you can now easily wake up to a playlist of your favorite songs served up by Spotify instead.

You’ll need to make sure that you have the latest versions of Google Clock and Spotify installed on your phone. You should also be running Android 5.0 or above on your phone, but you don’t need a premium Spotify account to use this feature.

Here’s how to set your alarm to a Spotify playlist:

  1. Open the Clock app and tap the alarm you want to edit or tap the + button to create a new alarm.
  2. Tap the Sounds  (bell) icon.
  3. Tap the Spotify tab.
  4. If this is the first time you’re using the new feature, you’ll be prompted to connect to your Spotify account. Tap Connect.
  5. Once your account is connected, you can select a playlist or album from your recently played songs, browse Spotify’s recommended playlists, or search for a specific track.

You can open up the playlist in Spotify before making a choice. Just tap the three buttons next to the playlist name and tap Open in Spotify.

Once you switch your alarm off, you have the option to keep Spotify playing as you get ready for your day by tapping Continue playing.

The advantage to using a playlist as opposed to a song as your alarm clock is that you’re less likely to get incredibly sick of what was once a favorite song. If you do choose a specific track to wake up to, and it’s a favorite, you should be warned that using a song as your alarm clock can be a surefire way to come to absolutely hate that song.

While waking up to soothing tunes works for some, if you need a little more coaxing when it comes to getting up early, you might want to check out these apps guaranteed to get you out of bed in the morning.

While the Amazon Echo has a ton of awesome skills, some of its simplest and most useful come packaged in. You probably ask Alexa about the weather almost every day, but do you ever wish it was a little better?

By default, Alexa’s weather reading only gives information about your general area by ZIP code. If you’d like to hear weather for your exact location on an hour-by-hour basis, there’s an Echo skill that will help.

How to Get Better Weather Forecasts on Amazon Echo

For a better weather experience, you need to use the BigSky skill. It’s powered by Dark Sky, a popular weather service on mobile. This will help you get forecasts for your address instead of an entire city.

To install it, either click Enable Skill on its desktop page, or say Alexa, enable Big Sky. Once you do so, you’ll need to link your account before it works properly.

Open the Alexa app and look for the Big Sky—Account Setup card. Tap Link Account and enter your complete address. Below this, you can choose a few options like level of detail and temperature/wind speed units. Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Submit to complete this.

Now, you can ask Alexa to get a forecast from the skill. Try the following commands:

“Alexa, ask Big Sky…”

  • “…what’s the temperature?”
  • “…will it rain today?”
  • “…what was the weather on January 1st, 1970?”
  • “…what’s the low temperature in the next seven days?”
  • “…give me a weather fact.”

Big Sky does a lot by default, but the developer also offers a Premium version for $3 a year. This allows you to add multiple addresses and label them, so you can ask “What’s the weather at dad’s house?” Premium also lets you get forecasts for anywhere, so the skill will answer “How hot will it get in Miami today?”

If this new skill inspired you, check out how to use Alexa to be more productive.

In April 2017, Twitter launched Twitter Lite, which, as its name suggests, is a lightweight version of its mobile app. Exclusively available on Android, Twitter Lite is designed to help people with older phones, limited storage, and/or spotty connections get on Twitter.

Twitter Lite Goes Global

Twitter Lite was tested in the Philippines before being made available elsewhere. And now, Twitter has made Twitter Lite available in 21 additional countries, including Argentina, India, and Turkey. This brings the total up to 46, with more to be added in the future.

Twitter Lite offers various advantages over its bigger brother. It’s only a 3MB install, and is designed to work on 2G and 3G networks, even if your connection is spotty. What’s more, the Data Saver lets you “control which images and videos load on your phone”.

Beyond that it’s pretty much business as usual, with Twitter Lite offering push notifications, Bookmarks for saving important tweets for later, threaded tweets making tweetstorms easier to read, and a Night Mode which is easier on the eyes.

Twitter Lite is now available to download from Google Play in Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Romania, Serbia, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, Uruguay, Venezuela, Yemen, and Zimbabwe.

The Best Lightweight Apps

Twitter Lite is just one of a number of lightweight apps we recommend. Especially if you have an older smartphone or a restrictive data plan. The best Android apps for those with slow internet speeds include Facebook Lite, YouTube Go, and Datally from Google.

Android Auto makes accessing your phone’s music, navigation, and more in your car easy and safe. It features tons of compatible apps and easy commands thanks to Google Assistant.

If you want to go further with Android Auto, you should know about a few quick tweaks to make it better.

1. Force Day or Night Mode

By default, Android Auto changes between day and night modes based on your car’s settings. If you’d rather force the light or dark theme all the time, you can do so with a trip to Android Auto’s developer settings.

Just like the standard Android developer options, Android Auto also includes a hidden menu with extra settings. To enable it, open the Android Auto app on your phone and choose About from the left menu.

Tap the About Android Auto header text about 10 times and you’ll see a prompt to enable developer options. Accept it, then hit the three-dot Menu button and choose Developer settings.

Here you’ll find several new options. While not all of them are useful for normal users, tap Day/Night to toggle between Car-controlled, Phone-controlled, Day, and Night. Phone-controlled uses sunrise/sunset times instead of your car’s system.

Also in this menu, have a look at the Allows 720p video output and the similar 1080p option. Depending on your car’s head unit, these could increase the quality of Android Auto’s display.

2. Autolaunch

If you don’t want to launch Android Auto manually every time you get in your car, this option comes in handy. Open the Settings menu from the left sidebar, and tap Autolaunch.

Here, enable Autolaunch (and Pocket detection if you don’t want it to start while your phone is in your pocket) and choose your car’s Bluetooth below.

3. Automatic Replies

When you receive a message while in Android Auto, you’ll see an option to send an automatic reply to it. If you tap the Auto reply option in the Settings menu, you can change this reply to whatever you like.

How to Set Default Apps for Any Action on Android and iOS

find-launch-android-apps

When you start using a new Android phone, you’ll frequently get messages asking you which app you want to open a particular type of file or link with. Once you set a default app for that action, you stop receiving notifications. But what happens if you download a different app—for example, a new SMS app for Android—and want to change the default app for the action? When you start using a new Android phone, you’ll frequently get messages asking you which app you want to open a particular type of file or link with. Once you set a default app for that action, you stop receiving notifications.

But what happens if you download a different app—for example, a new SMS app for Android—and want to change the default app for the action? It’s easy to change the default app on Android, but much more complicated on iOS. Let’s take a look at the process on both operating systems.

How to Set Default Apps for Any Action on Android

To set the default app for any action on Android, follow the simple step-by-step instructions below:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down to the Device section.
  3. Tap on Apps.
  4. Tap on the Gear icon in the upper right-hand corner.
  5. A new menu will appear. You need to scroll down to the Default section.
  6. There are six actions to choose from: Opening links, Assist and voice input, Home app, Browser app, Phone app, and SMS app.
  7. Tap on one of the options.
  8. Choose your app from the on-screen options.

Note: The process might vary slightly between manufacturers if you are not running stock Android.

How to Set Default Apps for Any Action on iOS

The process is almost impossible on iOS. Apple wants all its user to have the same experience, so you can’t set any default apps natively; you’re stuck with Apple’s choices.

The only workaround is to jailbreak your iPhone. This is not an easy process and not suitable for people who are not tech savvy. It can also void your phone’s warranty.

Jailbreaking your phone will unlock some default app options. You won’t have as much control as Android users, but you can set the default mail app, map app, and browser app.

Discord, the voice and text chat app that’s insanely popular amongst gamers, is launching its own dedicated game store. What’s more, Discord Nitro subscribers will gain access to a selection of games as part of their paid subscriptions.

Steam is the biggest gaming platform around. However, in terms of social, Steam has lost ground to Discord. In July 2018, Steam redesigned Steam Chat to compete with Discord. And now Discord is launching a game store to compete with Steam.

The Discord Store Opens for Business

As detailed on the Discord Blog, there are two elements to Discord’s move into games. The first is the Discord Store, where you’ll be able to buy a curated set of games. The second is free games for Nitro subscribers, which Discord is calling “Netflix for Games”.

The Discord Store won’t offer every game ever released. Instead, Discord is pitching it as a boutique store for the best games, as chosen by Discord employees. There will also be “First on Discord” games that will be temporarily exclusive to the Discord Store.

Meanwhile, Discord Nitro subscribers (who currently pay $4.99/month or $49.99/year) will be able to play a selection of classic games as part of their subscription. The initial offering includes Super Meat Boy, Saints Row: The Third, and Metro: Last Night Redux.

Discord has launched the Discord Store in beta by inviting around 50,000 Canadian users to be test subjects. However, the company plans to expand the beta over time, and eventually make the Discord Store available to all 150 million users.

Selling to 150 Million Dedicated Gamers

While this all seems to have taken some people by surprise, Discord was bound to start selling games at some point. Having built a userbase of 150 million people, it makes sense to then launch a store selling them the wares they currently buy elsewhere.

While Discord is the latest to try and steal Steam’s crown, it isn’t the first. There are plenty of other Steam alternatives worth considering. But if you love Steam so much you’ve bought too many games over the years here’s how to organize your Steam library.

Netflix does allow you to download movies and shows offline with the Windows 10 Netflix app. That’s why the location of the Netflix download folder becomes important. Netflix as yet does not give you an option to change the download location. Also, it does not allow you to browse to the place where your downloads are saved.

If your drive is filling up fast, you can manually move the downloads to another location. When you want to watch them again, copy them back to the original location.

Where to Find the Netflix Download Folder

  1. Open File Explorer from the Task Bar.
  2. The Netflix folder is a hidden folder. To display it, go to the View tab and then click on the Option menu button on the right.
  3. In Folder Options, select the View tab and scroll to the Files and Folders settings. If it’s not checked, then select the Show Hidden files, folders, and drives setting to enable it.
  4. Folder Options in Windows 10
  5. Click OK.
  6. From the File Explorer, you can navigate to the Netflix download folder. The full path is:
    C:Users[USERNAME]AppDataLocalPackages4DF9E0F8.Netflix_mcm4njqhnhss8LocalStateofflineInfodownloads

Here [USERNAME] is the Windows folder with your current username.

It’s obvious but you can also copy-paste C:Users and then select the folder with your username. Just append the file path after that to get to the folder without drilling down the hierarchy.

The Netflix download folder will be empty if you have never downloaded any movies or shows with the Windows 10 Netflix app. But, carry out your first download and you will see a bunch of files here. The largest will belong to the actual media file.

Netflix Download Folder

Notice that there are no file names which help you identify the movie or show. Rename the largest file and Netflix won’t recognize them. Also, you cannot play them with any media player except the Netflix app.

Till Netflix adds a few more file management features, at least the location can help you manage your drive space when it starts to run out. If you haven’t tried Netflix and its offline viewing feature, try it once.

Facebook recently announced a rather unexpected feature: the social network giant is making it easier to keep track of how much time you’re spending on Facebook and Instagram.

To make use of this feature, you’ll need to use the mobile apps. And that’s where a significant caveat comes in: it only tracks how much time you spend on Facebook or Instagram on your phone. Any time spent on Facebook or Instagram in a normal browser won’t be counted.

So, that kind of makes it less useful. However, if you’re the kind of person who mainly interacts with Facebook or Instagram on your phone, then it can really help shed light on whether you might be addicted to your smartphone.

To see how much time you spend on Facebook, go to Settings > Your Time on Facebook.

To see how much time you spend on Instagram, go to Settings > Your Activity.

If you’re not seeing the feature yet, it’s because it’s still in the process of rolling out.

Once you do have access to the feature, you should be able to see a chart of how much time you spend on Facebook or Instagram every day, together with an average length of time per day for the week. You can also use the feature to set yourself a daily limit for how much time you spend on Facebook, and the app will notify you when you hit that limit.

If Facebook’s recent measures just aren’t enough, there are plenty of apps out there that can help you fight your smartphone addiction, and encourage you to spend less time staring at a screen.
