The first beta of iOS 12.1 brings eSIM support, here’s how it’ll work

iOS 12.1 includes support for eSIM on the new iPhones, but you’ll need to wait until your carrier flips it on before being able to enjoy the benefits of dual-SIM functionality, like using two different plans and phone numbers at the same time, or keeping your phone line while using a local data plan when traveling.

Support for the electronic SIM (eSIM) standard has been uncovered from the first developer beta of iOS 12 which released to Apple’s registered developers eight days ago.... Read the rest of this post here

Apple’s new iOS 12 beta fixes the annoying ‘please update’ bug

iOS 12 beta testers have been plagued with a frustrating bug that continually pops up messages alerting them that a new iOS update is available when, in fact, it’s not. Apple has now fixed this bug, which is patched in the latest iOS 12 betas rolling out now, we understand.

The bug first made headlines on Thursday, when a number of iOS 12 beta testers – including developers and those on the public beta program – began to complain on social media about the problem. All users were seeing a pop-up message that read, “A new iOS version is now available. Please update from the iOS 12 beta.”

Users could close this window with a tap, but the same pop-up would reappear at regular intervals. There was nothing to be done about it, because the message itself was wrong – there was no new beta available for download at the time.

While it’s true that beta versions of software can have glitches and bugs, the iOS 12 beta has been, arguably, one of the most stable to date. For many people, the bug was one of the first times they had a serious issue with running the beta software.

Some had figured out yesterday that you could adjust the system date and time to turn off the non-stop notifications, but this was bad advice. Messing around with the system clock can introduce a host of other issues, like missing calendar appointments or reminders, for example.

Apple was aware of the issue, and has thankfully introduced a fix before the long holiday weekend here in the U.S.

The fix is available in both the new developer beta and the public beta, out now.

Finally! iOS 12 lets you clear all notifications with a tap and hold, no 3D Touch required

In another sign that Apple could in fact nix 3D Touch from 2019’s iPhone lineup, iDownloadBlog has discovered that iOS 12 provides a handy replacement gesture for clearing all alerts on devices without 3D Touch.

iOS 12 beta 11, which was seeded yesterday to Apple’s registered developers and members of the Apple Developer Program, finally makes it so that owners of older iPhone models without 3D Touch are able to clear all notifications at once with a simple tap and hold.... Hands-on video: what’s new in iOS 12 beta 9

Because we’re late in the game and Apple’s September event is looming, iOS 9 does not bring much new in terms of features, but you’ll appreciate continued stability improvements.

Apple released iOS 12 beta 9 on Monday, following last week’s botched beta 7 release that was pulled over performance issues and superseded with beta 8 just two days later.... Read the rest of this post here

Beta software always presents a risk going in. Companies usually recommend not installing it in primary devices for that very reason. For those who like to live on the edge, however, the latest beta of iOS 12 presented some very real issues.

Reports of buggy performance lag, freezes and crashes were pretty widespread for the seventh beta of the upcoming mobile operating system, causing some pundits to recommend skipping the install outright.

It’s a marked change over previous builds, which largely seemed to run fairly smoothly. Seems there were enough reports to cause Apple to pull the over the air update, however, less than 24 hours after it first started hitting devices. All of this doubly surprising, given the fact that iOS is likely near final, at this point, with the public version of the software expected to arrive at some point next month (along with, one hopes, some new hardware).

We’ve reached out to Apple to find out when we can expect beta 7 to rise again.

Group FaceTime calling removed from latest iOS 12 & Mojave betas, will return “later this fall”

Group FaceTime calling has even yanked out of iOS 12 beta 7 and macOS Mojave 10.14 beta 7, possibly indicating that Apple might have pulled the feature simply because it felt it wasn’t ready for prime time yet.

Group FaceTime video calling, one of the tentpole features of iOS 12 and macOS Mojave 10.14, has been removed from the latest betas that got released today, but is a temporary removal.... Read the rest of this post here

Apple’s Shortcuts app brings out limited HomeKit integration in latest update

An updated version of the Shortcuts app sports limited integration with Apple’s HomeKit system for the connected home. This might suggest that Siri Suggestions, and not the Home app, is powering current HomeKit integration.
