Trying to find good books to read during your commute or planning out your summer reading early? There is nothing more daunting than going to a bookstore without a shopping list. So, make sure that your next read is going to be a good one. There are plenty of sites you can use to look up books based on your personal taste, favorite authors and titles, or even based on a specific plot summary or character.

Whether user-generated, based on recommendations, or using a book recommendation search engine, there are a variety of ways that these sites are going to answer the question: what should I read next?

1. Gnooks

Gnooks is probably the simplest of these sites to use. You can enter up to three author’s names, and Gnooks will recommend another author you might like.

The interface is clean and distraction-free, but if you want to find out more about the recommended authors, you’ll have to take your search elsewhere.

The only other feature on Gnooks is the option to make one of three selections: I like it, I don’t like it, and I don’t know. Making these selections probably helps Gnooks algorithm improve.

2. Goodreads

You should already be familiar with this book community. Goodreads is packed with features that go beyond book recommendations. You don’t actually have to even sign up for an account to use the site’s book recommendations.

With Goodreads, you can search for a title, and you’ll see a list of other titles Goodreads users also enjoyed.

If you sign up for a free Goodreads account and rate books that you’ve read, the site can also offer up recommendations based on your reading history.

In addition to these features, given that Goodreads is a social network, you can also scan the reading lists of other users and friends to find book recommendations.

Some users have also created themed lists which you can use to discover your next read. You can either search for titles you enjoyed and see which lists they appear on, and find other titles you might like.

For example, searching for The Alexandria Quartet is featured on a variety of lists such as best post World War II fiction, alongside other greats such as Catch 22. But then it also does wind up on a list of best books ever alongside Twilight.

Goodreads isn’t the only site that you can use to catalog your book collection and also benefit from the community’s wisdom on what to read next.  LibraryThing is another good example.

3. Riffle

Riffle, much like Goodreads, is more of a social network for readers, so you’ll first have to sign up for a free account to use the site. After telling Riffle a little about your reading taste and (if you’re so inclined) following some of their suggested users, you can jump into the recommendations. Riffle does follow a few accounts for you based on your selections, including the “editor” accounts of your favorite genres.

If you follow a lot of users, you’ll have an active feed full on potential gems you’ll want to read.

You can also find recommendations based on the books you’ve read, but unfortunately, this feature only appears to work with certain books. Many of the more recently released books did not seem to generate suggestions.

4. Litsy

Unlike other sites listed here, Litsy is actually an app available for iOS and Android users, and it also doesn’t rely on an algorithm. Instead, Litsy relies entirely on its userbase for this information.

To use Litsy, you’ll first have to sign up for a free account after which you can search for books, read reviews, and of course find your next read.

Once you’ve signed up, you’ll get a list of users they recommend to follow. You can also search for other users to follow by searching for your favorite books and seeing who else has left reviews for them. When you want to recommend books for other users, you can’t just give the book a thumbs up; you have to leave a short review.

And that’s how you’re going to find your recommendations—by seeing what other Litsy users are reading. Users post photos of the book (or screenshots of the ebook), along with their reviews.

To find a good book to read, you’ll probably want to go directly to the profile of someone who has read other books you’ve enjoyed and also given them a ringing endorsement.

5. AllReaders

AllReaders is another no-frills website without much of a UI to speak of, but it’s a great option for those of you who are fans of thrillers. With AllReaders’ advanced search function, you can search for books based on plot, setting or even details about the protagonists. Titles are also accompanied by a plot summary, as well as setting and character information.

Plots or themes include a variety of thrillers, horror, and adventure—so this feature won’t be wildly useful if you’re looking for something a little more literary. You can also select the era in which the story is set, the characteristics of the protagonist and the antagonist, the setting, and the book’s writing style.

6. Amazon

Amazon should be an obvious option for searching book recommendations. You can find similar titles for any book since the search result is accompanied by a “Customers who bought this also bought” list.

While Amazon uses this feature primarily to get you to buy more stuff, you can also take a look at the recommendations for items that are frequently bought together:

And, don’t forget that Amazon is also home to the Kindle and its massive reading community too.

7. TasteDive

TasteDive (formerly TasteKid) is a great site for both book and author recommendations, along with other forms of entertainment. Just enter the title of your favorite book or your favorite author, and TasteDive will generate its recommendations.

TasteDive isn’t only about book recommendations. You can also use it for music, movies and TV shows. By the same token, you can find recommended books based on other books, as well as based on authors, TV shows, movies, music, and more.

While TasteDive’s recommendations are often pretty accurate, searching for recommendations based on newer titles or more obscure authors won’t yield any results.

8. Whichbook

Whichbook is another site that offers up suggestions based on specific characteristics rather than similar books – you can make your choices based on the mood of the book, using a series of sliders: Happy to Sad, Funny to Serious, Safe to Disturbing, and so forth. Drag up to four sliders around to make your selection for each characteristic of the book, and WhichBook will offer up a long list of recommendations.

You can also opt for making your selection based on specifics regarding character, plot, and setting.

9. BookBub

BookBub is worth a look for its handpicked recommendations.  You can also save yourself some money with discounts on books they think you’ll want to read.

When you first sign up, BookBub will ask you some questions on what kinds of recommendations you want (updates from authors you love, recommendations from people you trust, info on discounts etc.), and of course information on the genres of books you like. You can also follow your favorite authors, and in some cases (like Margaret Atwood for example), you’ll get recommendations straight from them.

In addition to recommendations for people you follow and autogenerated lists, the editors’ picks is a great way to discover new titles in your favorite genres.

10. Olmenta

Use Olmenta for random finds if you love to be surprised. The site is simple: you can select books based on nine genres including poetry, children’s books, and business.

There are no signups, no algorithms, and no real explanation as to how the books end up on the list, except for a link to recommend books via Twitter to the brains behind the operation.

11. Reddit

The subreddits /r/Books and /r/BookSuggestions are a good place to go to find other like-minded people on the hunt for a good read. You can search the previous threads, or create a post yourself asking for suggestions if you’re looking for something in particular.

/r/Books also has a book recommendations tab, where you’ll find a weekly recommendation thread where you can request suggestions and can help out other readers with suggestions of your own.

There are plenty more unique ways to find book recommendations including essential best books lists. And as the list begins to grow, you’ll probably want some tips on how to get your reading list under control.

If you own an Android phone and you’re tired of waking up to the standard alarm clock tones, you can now easily wake up to a playlist of your favorite songs served up by Spotify instead.

You’ll need to make sure that you have the latest versions of Google Clock and Spotify installed on your phone. You should also be running Android 5.0 or above on your phone, but you don’t need a premium Spotify account to use this feature.

Here’s how to set your alarm to a Spotify playlist:

  1. Open the Clock app and tap the alarm you want to edit or tap the + button to create a new alarm.
  2. Tap the Sounds  (bell) icon.
  3. Tap the Spotify tab.
  4. If this is the first time you’re using the new feature, you’ll be prompted to connect to your Spotify account. Tap Connect.
  5. Once your account is connected, you can select a playlist or album from your recently played songs, browse Spotify’s recommended playlists, or search for a specific track.

You can open up the playlist in Spotify before making a choice. Just tap the three buttons next to the playlist name and tap Open in Spotify.

Once you switch your alarm off, you have the option to keep Spotify playing as you get ready for your day by tapping Continue playing.

The advantage to using a playlist as opposed to a song as your alarm clock is that you’re less likely to get incredibly sick of what was once a favorite song. If you do choose a specific track to wake up to, and it’s a favorite, you should be warned that using a song as your alarm clock can be a surefire way to come to absolutely hate that song.

While waking up to soothing tunes works for some, if you need a little more coaxing when it comes to getting up early, you might want to check out these apps guaranteed to get you out of bed in the morning.

Facebook recently announced a rather unexpected feature: the social network giant is making it easier to keep track of how much time you’re spending on Facebook and Instagram.

To make use of this feature, you’ll need to use the mobile apps. And that’s where a significant caveat comes in: it only tracks how much time you spend on Facebook or Instagram on your phone. Any time spent on Facebook or Instagram in a normal browser won’t be counted.

So, that kind of makes it less useful. However, if you’re the kind of person who mainly interacts with Facebook or Instagram on your phone, then it can really help shed light on whether you might be addicted to your smartphone.

To see how much time you spend on Facebook, go to Settings > Your Time on Facebook.

To see how much time you spend on Instagram, go to Settings > Your Activity.

If you’re not seeing the feature yet, it’s because it’s still in the process of rolling out.

Once you do have access to the feature, you should be able to see a chart of how much time you spend on Facebook or Instagram every day, together with an average length of time per day for the week. You can also use the feature to set yourself a daily limit for how much time you spend on Facebook, and the app will notify you when you hit that limit.

If Facebook’s recent measures just aren’t enough, there are plenty of apps out there that can help you fight your smartphone addiction, and encourage you to spend less time staring at a screen.

How to Track All Your Online Orders and Deliveries Using One App

If you tend to do most of your online shopping from Amazon, tracking your shipments is a pretty straightforward task—you can even use your Echo to find out the location of your packages.

But if you find yourself ordering from a bunch of online retailers, you can easily lose track of the various packages en route to you—unless you use an app to keep track of it all in one place.

For iOS Users: Arrive

To use Arrive, you’re going to have to sign in with a Google account (and will have to have cookies enabled in Safari). The app does not support creating an account in any other way.

When you first set up the account, you’ll be prompted to turn on notifications, which is obviously a useful feature so that you know the minute that your package arrives.

And that’s it. Arrive will automatically sync the tracking information from any emails in your inbox. If you use multiple email addresses when making online orders, you can add more than one account, provided of course that it’s a Google account.

When you first sync your account, if you have emails in your inbox of items that have already been delivered, Arrive will pull those into the app but you can mark them as delivered.

If there are additional orders you want to track that aren’t going to your Gmail account, you can manually add deliveries using the tracking number.

Arrive can sync all your online purchases from major online retailers like Amazon, Wish, eBay, and Walmart, and supports over 400 carriers including Amazon, UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, and Canada Post.

For Android Users: ParcelTrack

ParcelTrack does things a little differently. When you first sign up for a free account, it will give you an address that is specific for your own private ParcelTrack inbox.

When you receive an email with your shipment info, you can just forward this email to your ParcelTrack inbox and the app will parse the information and add it to your app.

You can also enable push notifications for successful or attempted deliveries. If you want transit notifications, you’ll have to upgrade to a premium account.

If your Android phone supports the feature, tapping on a tracking number in your email can also automatically open up ParcelTrack and fill in most of the relevant information for you.

Concerns About Personal Privacy

Using these apps may bring up some serious privacy questions. Even with ParcelTrack, while you may not be sharing access to your inbox, you’re still sharing information on your purchasing habits.

Arrive clearly states that it collects tracking numbers, carrier names, order numbers, product details (name, price, photos) and a reference to emails that contain deliveries. The company says it does not sell personal information and only provides limited and redacted information to third parties such as their cloud storage provides.

ParcelTrack’s privacy policy is quite comprehensive but is a little more difficult to read, but according to the policy, which is based on German data protection laws, your data is anonymized.

When using any of these apps, be sure to take a look at their FAQs or privacy policies to have a clear understanding of how your data could be used.

If you prefer to track this information from your desktop, there are plenty of package tracking websites worth checking out, as well as a widget that puts tracking info in your Mac dashboard.

If you spend a lot of time on Instagram, you’ve no doubt come across live videos. If you’d rather watch a live video on your computer as it’s being broadcast, logging into your Instagram account in a browser won’t be any help. Instead, you’re going to need a Chrome extension to view Instagram live videos in your browser.

You’re going to specifically need the Chrome extension Chrome IG Story to view live videos from Instagram accounts you follow.

If you know someone you follow is going live, open up Chrome IG Story in your Chrome browser, and the live video will show up straight away. If the accounts you follow aren’t live, you can check out some of the popular live videos on Instagram at any given time.

In addition to watching live videos, you can also keep up with your friends’ Instagram stories. While you can also easily view Stories on the Instagram website without the need for an extra extension, there are some advantages to using this extension.

You can take your time going through the posts, as they don’t automatically switch to the next post. Instead, you hit the next button to skip to the next image.

You can also view stories and live videos anonymously. According to the developer, you won’t show up on the list of users who have viewed the story or video.

Other features of the extension include search by hashtag or location, the ability to download stories or videos, and the ability to view stories and videos of users you don’t follow.

Chrome IG Story is just one of many apps you can use alongside Instagram to get more out of the photo-sharing app.

secure-venmo-account

Nothing is more important to keep secure than your financial accounts. PayPal’s mobile payment service Venmo has come under fire several times, most recently for its default public feed where all public transactions can be seen by anyone.

In addition to shutting that setting off, there are plenty of other things you can do to secure your Venmo account and keep your financial information private.

1. Use a Password Generator

The first and most obvious line of defense when it comes to securing your accounts is to use a strong password. You can generate complex passwords using a password manager like 1Password or LastPass.

These free tools not only have password generators built-in and allow you to choose the level of complexity of your password, but also stores them so you don’t have to memorize them yourself. When you need it, the password manager automatically inputs the password for you.

2. Turn Off Default Public Settings

The Venmo feed is divided into three tabs: your transactions, your friends’ transactions, and public transactions. Depending on your privacy settings, your sent and received Venmo payments could be showing up in all feeds.

If your phone number, email address, or any other contact information you use in Venmo is in someone else’s contact list, they’ll see your Venmo transactions. This means you don’t actually explicitly grant your friends access to your transaction history.

The public feed is exactly what it sounds like: anyone who uses Venmo and has their privacy settings turned off will show up in this feed.

A surprising number of people don’t appear to realize transaction information on Venmo is public by default. According to Berlin-based researcher Hang Do Thi Duc, over 200 million Venmo transactions in 2017 were completely public. Worse yet, a bot recently tweeted each time an apparent drug payment showed up in the public feed before its developer ended the experiment.

By leaving your transaction information public, this also means that marketers can keep tabs on your spending habits and target you accordingly. In fact, public transactions are accessible using the Venmo API, meaning developers can access your data without even using the app.

So how do you fix it? To change your privacy settings, do the following:

  • Tap the Menu (hamburger) button
  • Tap Settings > Privacy
  • Under Default Privacy Settings select Private. This means your transactions can only be viewed by you and your recipient

You can also change the privacy settings of past transactions:

  • Under More tap Past Transactions
  • Tap Change All to Private

According to Venmo, if your friends opt for a more public setting for their transactions, your privacy setting will override their choice to keep their payments public.

3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication

By now, using two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever it’s available is a wise choice. And of course where your finances are in play, it’s a no-brainer.

If you’re not familiar with 2FA, it’s an added layer of security on your accounts that allows you to confirm your identity before you can access your accounts. You can confirm your identity either by entering a digital code that is either sent to you via SMS, or using an authentication app installed on your phone.

When Venmo first launched, it surprisingly didn’t include 2FA in its login options. This changed in 2015, and to Venmo’s credit, the setting is enabled by default on all accounts. Venmo uses SMS 2FA, which isn’t the most secure kind of 2FA, but it’s better than nothing.

With Venmo’s 2FA settings, you can add ‘recognized devices’ to your account so you don’t have to use 2FA on your devices every time you log in to your Venmo account, but the added inconvenience is worth keeping your account secure.

4. Add a PIN Code to the App

Aside from 2FA, Venmo has a few more security settings you should turn on. You can enable PIN code or fingerprint access to your account on your phone.

You can enable just a PIN code, or both a PIN code and fingerprint access, if your phone supports the feature.

This means that if someone somehow gains access to your phone, they would need to know your PIN code to access your Venmo account.

To enable these features, do the following:

  1. Tap the Menu (hamburger) button
  2. Tap Settings > PIN Code & Fingerprint
  3. Toggle Enable PIN code and enter a four digit PIN
  4. Toggle Use Fingerprint

Now when you open your Venmo app, you’ll have the choice of using your fingerprint or four-digit PIN to unlock the app.

5. Secure Your Phone With a Lock Screen

2FA isn’t much use if your phone itself isn’t secure. However, you can take certain measures to make sure that your phone is properly secured. At the very least, you should have a PIN code or fingerprint recognition enabled on your phone.

how to keep your venmo account secure

There are plenty of methods available to unlock your phone from passwords and pin codes, to pattern locks and facial or fingerprint recognition. If your phone has fingerprint recognition, this is probably one of the easiest and most secure ways to unlock your phone as you don’t have to worry about memorizing a complex password or pattern.

Note: You should also keep an eye on available security updates for your phone, and install them as they’re made available.

6. Don’t Link to Your Bank Account

Three methods are available in Venmo for sending money: your bank balance, a debit card, or a credit card. While the latter will cost you a 3 percent fee on each transaction, it’s also the most secure.

Any sort of theft or fraud using your credit cards is more likely to be protected by your bank—with little to no liability for you.

Per the FTC, you will never be liable for more than $50 for unauthorized credit card use. With your debit card, depending on how quickly you catch and report it, you could be liable for any amount, from $50 to the entire stolen balance.

If you can avoid using a debit card or linking your bank account, that’s for the best. An alternative would be to transfer a balance to your Venmo account and then disconnect all banking information.

7. Enable Venmo Notifications

Venmo offers certain kinds of notifications that you should enable. This way you’ll know of any transactions as they happen, so if your Venmo account is accessed by someone else, you’ll know straight away.

Go to Settings > Notifications to turn on notifications. Here, you’ll find three options to choose from: Push Notifications, Text Notifications, and Email Notifications. Push or Text are probably more handy if you want to be instantly updated of changes to your account.

You’ll want to turn on notifications at the very least for Money Sent, but there’s no harm in turning all notifications on, so that you’re aware of any kind of activity on your account.

8. Don’t Venmo Strangers

It’s a good idea to only use Venmo with friends and family. Well, it’s actually in Venmo’s User Agreement!

Venmo’s User Agreement says that personal accounts cannot be used for business transactions. So if you send or receive money from someone for a purchase or service, Venmo is not going to protect you if something goes wrong.

Let’s say you pay someone for a product and they don’t deliver. Venmo cannot refund you without that person’s permission. In fact, there’s no way to cancel a payment in Venmo unless you inadvertently sent the money to someone who doesn’t use Venmo.

Note: You must apply for a business account with Venmo if you plan to use it for business-related transactions.

9. Double-Check Before Tapping Send

That brings us to the next point. When sending money, always double-check the names, numbers, or email address of your contacts. It gets easier as you use Venmo regularly with the same people, but if it’s a first-time transaction, keep an eye on the details.

Again, payments can’t be canceled by the sender, so if you inadvertently send that money to the wrong contact, you’re going to have to rely on them to return the money.

10. Revoke Access and Log Out Sessions

If your phone is lost or stolen, and you’ve added it as a trusted device, you can immediately revoke access to your account on that device. That means if someone manages to get past your phone security, and you don’t have a pin set up on the app, you can stop them from using your Venmo account.

To do this, log in to your Venmo account in a browser and go to Settings > Security.

Here you’ll see any active sessions in a browser, as well as any remembered devices. You can log out of sessions you don’t recognize, and remove devices from your remembered devices.

how to keep your venmo account secure

As an added measure, you should also change your Venmo password at that point.

Don’t Just Secure Venmo, Secure Other Apps!

In this day and age, Venmo isn’t the only app you should take a closer look at. It’s a good idea to review all of your privacy and security settings.

On social media, there are some simple tips and tricks to keep in mind to secure your Facebook account. You can also easily find out if someone has gained unauthorized access to your Facebook account.

For your digital finances, there are plenty of key tips to keep in mind to secure your mobile banking accounts. And depending on what accounts you regularly use, you can also follow these steps to find out if your account has been hacked.

The latest Google Earth feature (available on ChromeiOS, and Android) allows you to measure the distance between any two points, as well as the perimeter or area based on your selection.

Using Google Earth’s Measure Tool on Chrome

Measuring distance using Google Earth in Chrome is a simple process:

  1. Search for the location you want to begin with and click the Measure Distance icon in the sidebar.
  2. Click the location on the map that you want to use as your beginning point.
  3. To measure the distance from one point to another, simply drag the pointer away from your original location. You can pan, by clicking and dragging, and zoom in/out as you would normally on Google Earth, and the line will not be broken. If you click and instantly let go, you will create a new point on the map.
  4. When you find your end location, click twice on your endpoint and Google will let you know the distance in kilometers and miles.

You can also click and drag your start or endpoint to move it elsewhere on the map.

If you prefer to calculate the perimeter use the same method above, but instead, add points at each corner of what you are measuring, and then join the shape by clicking again on the first point you added.

Using Google Earth’s Measure Tool on iOS or Android

If you want to use the feature on your iOS or Android phone, use the following steps:

  1. Search for the location you want to begin with and tap the menu button and select Measure.
  2. Tap on the location you want to use as your beginning point, and tap Add point.
  3. If you want to measure the distance from one point to another, simply begin to drag the pointer away from your original location. You can pan (tap and drag) and zoom in and out (pinch), and the line will not be broken.
  4. When you find your end location, tap on the location, and tap Add Point.
  5. Google will then let you know the distance in the unit of measurement of your choice.

To select the unit of measurement in the app, tap the Menu (hamburger) button > Settings and under Formats and Units select Meters and kilometers or Feet and miles.

Google does offer the caveat that the feature is not 100 percent accurate, particularly when measuring areas with 3D terrain.

Interesting Uses for the Measure Tool

There are lots of possible uses for the feature, which Google says is one of the most requested for Google Earth:

  • Google suggests teachers use the feature to create math problems. For example, they suggest challenging students to use Google Earth’s latest feature to find out which state is bigger: Colorado or Utah?
  • The feature offers an alternative to Google Maps for quickly measuring distances for your runs or bike rides, or for a possible road trip.
  • If you’re house hunting, it’s an easy way to get an average measurement of the plot of land you’re buying.
  • If you’re planning on traveling, you can use Google’s measuring tool to calculate the distances you’ll fly to get from one place to another, as well as distances within your travel destinations.

In addition to measuring distance, Google Earth can be used to explore the world’s natural wonders, among many other nifty features.

There’s no question you should be using a password manager to keep your passwords safe. There are plenty of options out there, but two of the most reputable options are LastPass and 1Password. If you’re thinking of switching from one to the other, they both make it very easy to export and import your data.

How to Switch From LastPass to 1Password

When exporting your LastPass passwords, you have to use the website rather than the browser extension. It’s also recommended to use Chrome, Opera, or Safari, but not to export your data using Firefox.

To export your data, do the following:

  1. While signed in to your LastPass account, click More options in the left sidebar menu.
  2.  Click Advanced > Export
  3. Enter your password when prompted.
  4. You’ll see all your LastPass data in a  plain text document in your browser.
  5. Select all the data using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd+A , and use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd+C to copy it.

To import your data into 1Password, do the following:

  1. While signed in to your 1Password account in a browser, click your username in the top right corner and select Import
  2. From the list of services that appear, select LastPass.
  3.  If you have more than one vault in 1Password, select the vault where you want to import your data.
  4. In the field where you can paste your CSV data, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd+V to fill in your data.
  5. LastPass will immediately begin to import your data. You’ll see a message letting you know how many accounts have been imported.

Immediately after you complete your import, you can undo the import if you notice that anything went wrong.

How to Switch From 1Password to LastPass

To export your 1Password data, you’ll need to use the desktop app:

  1. While signed in to your 1Password account in the desktop app, open the vault you want to export (if you have more than one vault.)
  2. Click File > Export > All items. (If you want to be selective about the process, you can choose selected items. You can select multiple accounts first by holding down the shift key and clicking the accounts you want to export.)
  3. You’ll be prompted to enter your password to continue.
  4. In the dialog box that opens, you can select a file name, format and choose where the file with your passwords will be saved. For the format, select .pif. (1Password warns you that this file will not be encrypted so be sure to keep it safe.)
  5.  For fields to export, keep Common fields selected.
  6. Click Save.

LastPass recommends using Firefox to import your passwords. To import them, open LastPass in your browser and do the following:

  1. Click More options in the left sidebar menu > Import
  2. In the window that opens, for Source select 1Password from the dropdown menu.
  3. Open the pif file you downloaded using your browser of choice. You can do this quickly by opening a new tab and dragging the pif file into the empty tab.
  4. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd+A to select all the data and Ctrl/Cmd+C to copy it.
  5. In the LastPass import window, paste that data in the Content field.
  6. Click the Upload button.
  7. LastPass will parse the data, and you should see all the passwords listed. You can manually remove any items you don’t want to import, and then click Import All. (You can also avoid importing duplicates by keeping Remove duplicate items checked.)

If you’re not sold on either LastPass or 1Password, then check out these alternative password managers.

You wouldn’t expect social media features in a money payment app, but that’s exactly what peer-to-peer app Venmo offers. Many users may not realize that Venmo transactions are public by default.

Venmo has three main tabs: one for your personal transactions, one for all the transactions made by friends (i.e. people on your phone’s contact list), and one for all transactions made by people who have their payments completely public.

Luckily it only takes a few easy steps to turn this feature off.

Why Are Public Transactions an Issue?

Venmo’s public transaction feature received a lot of attention when Berlin-based researcher Hang Do Thi Duc was able to use Venmo’s API to put together a site aggregating all that public information. She revealed that over 200 million transactions were made publicly in 2017 alone.

While Do Thi Duc’s experiment itself didn’t reveal any personal information about Venmo users, a Twitter bot by Joel Guerra soon followed and revealed all kinds of public transactions relating to drug, alcohol, and sex-related purchases—along with the first name and last initial of each transaction’s user.

How to Make Your Venmo Transactions Private

If you haven’t already, you should fire up Venmo and turn this feature off. To do this, do the following:

  1. Tap the Menu (hamburger) button > Settings > Privacy.
  2. Under Default Privacy Settings select Private.
  3. To make any past transactions private, under More, tap Past Transactions and tap Change All to Private.

Venmo’s public transactions could also be used in targeted advertising, adding to the already very long list of ways that your information could be exploited by online marketers.
