Protect your HomePod (or your table) with a stand

The HomePod, a smart speaker from Apple that works with Apple Music and AirPlay, is pretty great on its own. However, you may find yourself in need of a stand if you want to protect a table surface, attach your HomePod to the wall, or dampen the HomePod’s vibrations so it doesn’t move around. Here are some of the best stands for your Apple HomePod.

LifeProof Slam iPhone Case: Protection without major bulk

Get two meter drop protection without a lot of bulk.

LifeProof is known for its heavy-duty, protective iPhone cases. The Slam model, while not being the tank-like armor that LifeProof is known for, is still a very protective case. Yet, it isn’t as bulky as many heavy-duty cases are. Generally, bulkier cases are more protective, but the Slam strikes a great balance between protection and bulk.

LifeProof Slam iPhone Case: What I like

LifeProof inspires brand loyalty. My daughter's fiancé once accidentally dropped his phone off of a third-floor balcony. His phone, encased in a LifeProof case, survived the fall without a scratch or any loss of functionality. Now he won't buy any other brand.

As a general rule, a slim case is not going to be as protective as a thick case. Most people look for some middle ground; we all want a case that will protect without having to carry a tank in our pockets. LifeProof does a good job with the Slam on finding that middle ground. It's definitely not an ultra-slim case, but slimmer than most heavy-duty cases you'll find.

This is a two-piece case. Each case comes with a case key, which you'll need to use as a wedge to open the case. Just insert it into each the divots at the bottom two corners, one at a time, and twist to open. Place the phone into the rubber bumper, then snap the plastic back into place.

Unlike many of LifeProof's cases, the Slam does not include a screen. You can, of course, buy a separate screen protector, but it's not built in. None of the ports are covered up or plugged either.

There are precision cutouts for the camera, mute switch, Lightning port, and speakers. There are button covers over all of the phone's buttons. The iPhone's functionality is not affected by the case at all. The lip of the bumper does come up over the screen just a bit to protect your screen when the phone is placed face-down.

The LifeProof Slam comes in many different colors and patterns, but each of them is clear enough on the back to be able to see your beautiful iPhone through the case. You can find this case in the iPhone 7/8 and 7 Plus/8 Plus sizes on Amazon, though if you want the newer sizes, as well as other phones, you can find them on LifeProof's website.

Might be more case than some people need

LifeProof Slam iPhone Case: What I don't like

Not everyone needs a case with such serious protection. If you just want something attractive that adds some protection, you might not want to deal with two-piece, key-to-open design.

It is a plastic case and looks it. If you dress more formally and want a case to match, you might prefer something with more upscale-looking materials.

Overall great protective iPhone case

LifeProof Slam iPhone Case: Bottom line

4.5 out of 5

If you're looking for serious, heavy-duty protection for your iPhone, but you don't want to carry a tank in your pocket, take a look at the LifeProof Slam. While it protects from drops up to two meters, it retains a pretty slim profile. It's a great compromise between bulk and protection.

Elegant and functional

Bellroy Phone Case - 3 Card: What I like

Bellroy's products are consistently high-quality goods, crafted from premium materials, and this case is no exception. The back of the case is a soft leather. Soft microfiber lines the inside of the case, where you'll find slots devoted to a SIM tool and SIM card.

Flip open the compartment on the back of the case, and you can put up to three credit cards, ID cards, or a bit of cash in there. The cards never contact your phone directly; they are surrounded by microfiber on both sides. While the compartment door is open, use it as a kickstand and watch videos. Flip the compartment closed, and the magnetic closure makes a satisfying snap.

The bumper is a flex polymer with chamfered edges. Those edges come up just over the edge of your phone's screen, so if you set your phone screen down on a table, your screen won't contact the table.

There are precision cut-outs for the camera, Mute switch, and all of the iPhone's buttons. The entire bottom of the case is cut out to allow unfettered access to the Lightning port and speakers. Wireless charging still works with this case on your iPhone, although not if the wallet portion is full of cards.

You can buy this case the iPhone X/XS, iPhone XR, and iPhone XS Max in Black, Navy, Stone, Coral, and Graphite. It's also still available for the iPhone 7/8 at a lower price and slightly different color selection.

Not inexpensive

Bellroy Phone Case - 3 Card: What I don't like

The price tag isn't cheap by any measure, though you do get a lot for your money. If I have any other complaints, it's just that the last credit card can take a few seconds to get out. The microfiber on both sides adds friction so it doesn't just slide out.

Great leather wallet iPhone case

Bellroy Phone Case - 3 Card: Bottom line

4.5 out of 5

This is an attractive, professional-looking, protective case made from premium materials. It holds up to three cards, a SIM tool, and a SIM card. The wallet compartment lid can also be used a kickstand. It snaps shut securely and magnetically when not in use. You cannot go wrong with this beautiful case from Bellroy.

Case-Mate Barely There Leather iPhone Case: What I like

Most of the leather cases I've tested and seen are fairly bulky. Case-Mate's Barely There Leather iPhone Case is just what it sounds like. It may be the thinnest leather iPhone case I've seen. It's similar in design to Apple's leather iPhone case but somehow thinner.

Since it's a thin case, some features normally seen on cases are missing. For example, it doesn't have a bumper all the way around. Rather, the bottom of the case is completely open to allow unfettered access to the speakers and Lightning port. The buttons are covered with metallic covers that match the leather exterior. Plus, the camera and mute switch have cut-outs to allow access. The case doesn't interfere with the phone's functionality, including wireless charging, at all. Even though it's a minimal case, the lip of the case does come up slightly over the screen to protect it from scratches if you set it face down.

The interior of the case is lined with microfiber the same color as the leather and metallic buttons. The microfiber protects your phone from scratches. There are four color choices: Black, Butterscotch (light brown), Cardinal (red), and Metallic Blush.

I was surprised to see some negative reviews for this case on Amazon. There seem to be some people who feel that it's poor quality leather in look and smell. I don't even notice any off smell; if I sniff hard I can detect a slight leather scent, so I don't understand that particular complaint. As for the quality, it seems fine (not special, but fine) to me, though I don't claim to be a leather expert. I guess high-end leather is usually pretty thick, while the leather here is very thin. Of course, this is advertised as an ultra-thin case, just 2mm, so it's expected.

Not the most protective

Case-Mate Barely There Leather iPhone Case: What I don't like

This is not a heavy-duty protection type of case. Not everyone likes the bottom of the phone completely exposed, though it doesn't bother me. While it's nice to have a microfiber interior, this particular microfiber isn't super plush. This is a basic case.

As previously stated, some people have a problem with the quality of the leather, so if you're specific about how you want your leather to look, feel, and smell, you might want to weigh your options.

Great for what it is

Case-Mate Barely There Leather iPhone Case: Bottom line

4 out of 5

It's all in the name. If you want a barely there leather case for your iPhone, this is a great choice. It's just 2mm thick and weighs very little. If you want heavy-duty protection, or an ultra-plush, sumptuous leather covering for your phone, this isn't it. However, if you don't want to add any extra bulk, but like the luxurious look and feel of leather, this might be the case for you. Just be careful you don't drop it too often.

Classy and protective

Mous Limitless 2.0 iPhone Case: What I like

Mous' patented AiroShock™ dampens the impact of drops while providing extra grip to the phone. The case is constructed from rigid plastic, actually a mix of polycarbonate and TPU, except for the design panel embedded on the back. The inside of the case has molded spots where you can store a SIM card and a SIM ejector tool.

There is a substantial lip higher than the screen, so if you place (or drop) your phone face now, the screen won't contact the surface. The camera, Lightning port, mute switch, and speakers are all fully accessible via precision cut-outs. All of the buttons have covers and are fully functional.

This is a case you'd feel comfortable taking on an outdoor adventure as well as into the executive boardroom. It's incredibly classy-looking and comes in some cool materials. The design panel embedded on the back is made from gorgeous genuine materials, not plastic lookalikes. You can choose from Aramid Carbon Fibre, Walnut, Leather (black), Bamboo, and Shell. You can see the Walnut, Leather, and Shell cases in my photos.

A nice little bonus: there are magnets embedded into the case, so if you wish to place one of their card wallets on the back of your phone, or mount it to their car vent mount, you don't need any adhesive. The magnets are used instead of anything sticky.

Fairly pricey

Mous Limitless 2.0 iPhone Case: What I don't like

Well, these aren't cheap cases. My only other minor complaint is that because they are so rigid, they are not super easy to take on and off the phone. It's also somewhat heavy, but then my own tastes run to the ultra-light.

Stylish protection

Mous Limitless 2.0 iPhone Case: Bottom line

4.5 out of 5

Mous Limitless 2.0 iPhone Case is a classy, dressy, and stylish case that doesn't skimp on protectiveness. Thoughtful touches such as embedded magnets for accessory attachments, genuine design panel materials, SIM card/tool storage, and an included screen protector help make this a stand-out case.

Heavy-duty but feather light

UAG Plasma iPhone Case: What I like

Heavy-duty, ultra-protective cases tend to be bulky. While the UAG Plasma iPhone Case does add a bit of size to your iPhone, it doesn't add a lot of weight. The plastic case is molded with a web of hollow cells to add protection and grip to your phone without the heaviness.

Precision cutouts and button covers ensure that your phone is fully functional within the case. Even wireless charging still works. The lip of the bumper comes well up over the screen, especially around those vulnerable corners. This means that if you place or drop your phone screen down, you get some protection. UAG Plasma iPhone Case meets military drop-test standards (MIL STD 810G 516.6), meaning it endured 26 drops from four feet high without sustaining any damage.

It comes in a variety of translucent colors, which allows you to see or at least partially see the color of your iPhone through the case. The one in my photos is the colorless clear shade Ice on a black iPhone.

Either it's your style or it's not

UAG Plasma iPhone Case: What I don't like

Though this really has no bearing on the quality of the case, it's not to my personal taste. It has a very particular look, and you either like it or you don't. UAG's Plasma iPhone Case is constructed from plastic. While it isn't crazy expensive, it's not cheap either, For the price, some people may want higher-quality materials.

Protect your investment

UAG Plasma iPhone Case: Bottom line

4.5 out of 5

UAG is a trusted brand for protecting your precious devices. The Plasma iPhone Case offers heavy-duty military tested protection in a lightweight case. If you like its mechanical-looking style, you'll love this case.

However, it is important to note that the ring on the back will prevent wireless charging.

The whole package

Sonix Clear Case

Sure, this is just a simple, clear case. But I've seen the Sonix brand cases at a certain high-end department store for a lot more than the current price at Amazon ($14 as of this writing), and this one comes with a bubble-free tempered glass screen protector. The case is military drop test certified and has a limited lifetime warranty.

$14 at Amazon

You don't want that gorgeous and expensive new phone to go unprotected, even for a minute. Pick up one of these cases and keep that iPhone XS Max pristine.

Snakehive iPhone Wallet Case: What I like

I'm just so impressed with the quality of these cases. I've tested quite a large number of iPhone cases, and there are very few in this price range that boast such expensive materials, aesthetics, and craftsmanship. Snakehive is a British company, and their cases are handcrafted from full grain European nubuck leather. The leather has such a soft, velvety feel to it, almost like an ultra suede. The inside is more of a standard leather, but still smooth and pleasant to touch. It's a professional-looking case that's right at home in the boardroom.

I'm just so impressed with the quality of these cases ... there are very few in this price range that boast such expensive materials, aesthetics, and craftsmanship.

The outside front cover has a cutout so you could actually talk on the phone with your case closed. Upon opening the case, you'll find three card slots, plus a larger slot for bills. A minimalist TPU holder sits inside to keep your phone secure. The lip of the TPU part of the case does not come up over the phone screen, so if you tend to set your phone on a surface screen down, you'd want the folio closed to keep your screen from getting scratched. Precision cutouts and button covers assure that all buttons, ports, speakers, and the camera are fully functional within the case. Wireless charging still works as well.

The back of the folio case is has a stitched crease down the middle so that the case can be folded into a horizontal stand for video viewing. When you close the case, the magnetic closure clasp automatically snaps into place.

Amazon carries a number of colors of the Snakehive iPhone Wallet Case, such as Brown, Navy, Black, and Plum in all three new iPhone sizes. In the X/XS size, you'll see an additional half dozen or so colors offered. For more color variety, and optional monogram engraving (for a fee), you can go directly to their website.

That flap though

Snakehive iPhone Wallet Case: What I don't like

This is pretty nitpicky, but as you can see from the photos, the magnetic closure clasp sort of sits there when it's not in use. I just don't think it's cute sticking up like that.

Overall great case

Snakehive iPhone Wallet Case: Bottom line

4.5 out of 5

This is the case I'd carry if I used a wallet folio case. Snakehive's iPhone Wallet looks and feels great, boasting full-grain European nubuck leather handcrafted in a variety of colors. It's protective and functional, with a TPU holder, three card slots and a cash slot. The case folds to form a video viewing stand. For the price point, you won't find better.
