Apple releases tvOS 12.1.2 beta 1 for developers

Installing the tvOS 12.1.2 beta is more complex than an iOS or macOS beta, but it’s also for developers only.

Just like with iOS and macOS, Apple makes beta versions of tvOS available for developers to test. But unlike the betas for other systems, installing it on the Apple TV (4th generation) or Apple TV 4K is more complicated than a simple download and go. If you’re a developer and you’re having trouble getting the tvOS beta installed, here’s what you need to do.

Unlike Apple’s other operating systems, you can’t back up your Apple TV; as such, Apple offers two options for updating tvOS: over the air, which just updates the system; and via USB-C, which restores the device to its factory settings.

Apple releases watchOS 5.1.3 beta 1 to developers

Installing the watchOS 5.1.2 beta is more complex than an iOS or macOS beta, but it’s also for developers only.

You need to install a certificate on your Apple Watch, then download the software to your iPhone running the iOS 12.1 beta, transfer it across, and get it up and running. It’s not hard, but it does take patience and you may have to troubleshoot.

How to install the watchOS 5.1 beta certificate

Note: Make sure you're running the developer beta for iOS 12.1 on your iPhone before trying to install watchOS 5.1.

  1. Log into developer.apple.com on the iPhone paired with your Apple Watch.
  2. Go to the watchOS 5.1 download page.
  3. Tap on Download watchOS 5.1 beta Configuration Profile.
  4. Tap on Apple Watch from the Choose a Device popup.
  5. Tap on Install begin.
  6. Enter your Passcode

  8. Tap on Restart to reboot your Apple Watch.

Once your Apple Watch has rebooted the installation process goes back to normal.

How to install watchOS 5.1 on your Apple Watch

The certificate is what tells the Watch app on your iPhone that watchOS 5.1 is available. Once the Watch app detects it, the process of installing it is the same as any other watchOS update, detailed below. (If the beta doesn't show up, reboot again.)

  1. Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi and launch the Apple Watch app.
  2. Tap on the My Watch tab.
  3. Tap on General.
  4. Tap on Software Update.

  5. Tap on Download and Install.
  6. Enter your iPhone Passcode.
  7. Tap Agree to the Terms and Conditions.

  8. Make sure your Apple Watch is charged to at least 50% and connect it to the magnetic charger.
  9. Tap Install on your iPhone and/or your Apple Watch.

The Watch OS update will download and transfer to your Apple Watch and Apple Watch will reboot to apply the update. You can follow the progress on the Apple Watch screen, and once it's done, you'll be all set.

If the watchOS 5.1 update fails at the verification stage, try again. If it fails repeatedly, un-pair and re-pair your Apple Watch and try again. (That un-pairing and re-pairing process takes a while so make sure verification really isn't working for you before you go through it.)

How to downgrade watchOS

Instructions for reverting back to watchOS are behind the developer center log in, so we can't replicate them here. Suffice it to say you can't do it on your own. Your Watch will have to go back to Apple. That alone should give anyone who doesn't absolutely need the developer beta pause to reconsider installing it in the first place.

For developers who, for whatever reason, really do need to revert, you can find instructions for contacting Apple at the bottom of this document:

iOS 12 FAQ: Everything you need to know

How to make an archived backup of your iPhone or iPad

Before you begin, make sure you back up your iPhone or iPad. While the beta process is fairly straightforward, any time you make any significant change to your device you risk problems. And with your personal data, it's always — always! — better to be safe than sorry. Even if you back up every night, you'll want to make sure it's absolutely up-to-date.

  1. Plug iPhone or iPad into your Mac or Windows PC.
  2. Launch iTunes.
  3. Click on the iPhone or iPad icon in the menu bar when it appears.
  4. Make sure backup is set to This Computer. (And enable Encrypted backup — it's worth it!)
  5. Click on Back Up Now. (Click on Encrypt Backup and add a password — you want the security.)
  6. Back up Apps, if asked.

  7. Press Command, to open Preferences. (Or go to iTunes in the menu bar and click on Preferences.
  8. Click on the Devices tab.
  9. Control-click on your Backup and choose Archive.

Archiving will prevent your current backup from being overwritten by an iOS 12 backup in the future, should you want to revert for any reason.

How to register your account for the iOS 12.1 beta

Before you do anything else, make sure you have a developer account with Apple — without a paid account, you won't be able to download any non-Xcode betas.

Thanks to Apple's configuration profile, you can download iOS betas directly on your iPhone or iPad, no Mac required! (You can still install iOS 12.1 on your iPhone or iPad by connecting your device to iTunes, but you'll need to be running the Xcode beta first. The method listed below is generally a lot faster, with fewer wires.)

  1. Go to developer.apple.com on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Click on the "Download New Betas" tab.
  3. Log in with your developer account's username and password.
  4. Go to the iOS 12 beta section and tap the download. This will start the process of downloading the iOS beta software profile on your iPhone.
  5. The Beta software profile will appear on your phone. Tap Install. You may need to enter your Passcode.
  6. Agree to the Consent form and press Install once in the upper right corner, and once at the bottom of the screen.
  7. Press Restart to apply the changes to your iPhone.

How to install the iOS 12.1 beta

To install the iOS 12.1 beta, you'll need to visit Software Update on your iPhone or iPad.

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen, tap on General, then tap on Software Update.
  2. Once the update appears, tap on Download and Install.
  3. Enter your Passcode.

  4. Tap Agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  5. Tap Agree again to confirm.

Your iPhone or iPad will reboot to install iOS 12. There will be a couple progress bars going across the screen. Sit tight, and let everything finish.

How to get started with iOS 12.1 beta

Once your iPhone or iPad reboots, it'll be running iOS 12.1. There's a brief bit of setup you'll need to go through, however, as the system will have changed enough that it'll need your login to complete the update.

  1. Tap Continue.
  2. Enter your Apple ID password. iCloud settings will update, so give it a minute.
  3. Tap Get Started.

Once that's done, you'll be on the Home screen and ready to rock iOS 12.1.

Best monitor arms for the LG 27UD88

The LG 27UD88 is a great 4K monitor that comes with its own stand. Heavy duty

3M Desk Mount Monitor Arm

This is a tough, heavy-duty monitor arm that supports up to 30 pounds, definitely enough to support the LG 27UD88. Despite this strength, the arms are actually hollow, allowing you to run your cables through the arm to tidy up your workspace.

$96 at Amazon

Dual-wield monitors

VIVO Dual Arm Monitor Desk Mount

If you've picked up two LG 27UD88s and need to mount them both, this is a great option. It features a heavy-duty clamp so the weight of two monitors won't cause it to tip over, and each arm is independent of the other so you can adjust each screen to the perfect height for your needs.

$50 at Amazon

Manage your cables

EleTab Single Monitor Desk Mount

EleTab's VESA arm features full 90-degree up and down tilt, full landscape and portrait swivel, and channels for holding your monitor's cables to help keep your desk neat.

$50 at Amazon

These are all great monitor arms, but if I was getting one, I'd pick up the EleTab Single Monitor Desk Mount. It has a nice balance of price and ease-of-use, wide tilt angles, and built-in cable management as great additional perks. You can't go wrong with any of these though, and they all have enough strength to hold up the LG 27UD88.
